Reconnect with Denis Island's uncut nature and discover serenity in a private beachfront cottage.

"The welcome and arrival at our beachfront cottage were excellent. Fantastic cottage with a pavilion, garden overlooking the sea, and private beach with loungers and chairs. Fantastic tranquillity in paradisiacal nature! In addition, the food and service were second to none. Nowhere is the sea a more intense blue/turquoise and the sand whiter. Very nice that there is only WiFi in the lobby and the restaurant."

TRADE WINDS...

Nature is beautiful and predictable, soothing and dramatic.

As a remote Indian Ocean island, we are intensely aware of our natural environment - the subtle changes and nuances, the shifting sands and seasons, its immense power and the power it gives us in return.

Our hotel is cooled by the sea breeze, powered by the sun, nurtured by the gardens and watered by the rains.

We try to work with nature, rather than against her. We wouldn't have it any other way...

A beautiful friendship: The endemic Seychelles anemonefish (Amphiprion fuscocaudatus) and Sea anemone (Stichodactyla mertensii) have a mutually beneficial relationship where the fish lives and is protected by the anemone, and in return, it defends the anemone from its predators and parasites. Photo taken by one of our Reef Rescuers undertaking the coral reef restoration project in the Cousin Island Special Reserve MPA.

Good News for Denis Island’s Sea Birds:

Earlier this year Chris Feare published a blog post describing how endemic birds on Denis Private Island (Seychelles) had responded positively to the eradication of Common Myna Birds. Feare also mentioned the possibility that some seabirds might also have benefitted from the myna eradication.

Last month, with the assistance of Green Islands Foundation, Feare returned to Denis Island to conduct a census of our nesting and breeding sea bird colonies. His findings were very positive: there are two main colonies of Lesser Noddies on the island. In a 2014 census, each colony was reported to have just 10 -15 nests. At the latest count, both colonies had grown to over 500 nests! Populations of Fairy (White) Terns and Blue Pidgeons have also increased dramatically since the eradication of myna birds.

Feare also reported an interesting anomaly regarding nesting behavior of Lesser Noddies on Denis Private Island: “ All of the nests were high in the tree canopies. This differed from Lesser Noddy nesting on other Seychelles islands, where birds can nest as low as two metres in some bushes. At the moment we cannot explain this difference.”
