Need to know what trails are open for hiking and what roads are accessible? I make sure to update the Hike Oregon trails accessibility spreadsheet at least once a week so that you can check which trails do or do not have snow, which roads are open and where you can go snowshoeing when winter starts.

🎥NEW on the Hike Oregon YouTube channel this week I have a video of my favorite hike that I did this year. I was able to get into the area near Crescent Lake that was in the Red Fire closure pretty much all summer, just a few days after they rescinded the closure order and before it snowed. Check it out:

I get so many questions about gear, and with all of the gear brands and options out there, purchasing hiking and backpacking gear can be incredibly overwhelming. My goal is to make it easier for all of you to navigate gear by featuring a different piece of gear every week.
This week I am talking about Injinji toe socks. When I wear my trail runners (during the late spring, summer and early fall), I also wear the Injinji Trail Midweight Mini-Crew socks (https://www.avantlink.com/click.php?tt=pl&ti=115&pw=231113&mi=10248&pt=3&pri=603567). These socks, in combination with trail runners, were an absolute game changer for me as far as getting blisters is concerned. I used to get blisters all the time, especially in between my toes, when I hiked more than like 10-12 miles. As soon as I switched to these awesome socks, I stopped getting blisters all together!!! They are lightweight and thin enough so that there isn't an uncomfortable amount of fabric between your toes (yes, the feeling does take some getting used to), but the socks really help wick away the moisture from your feet and in between your toes. If you are blister prone, I highly recommend that you try these!!

I get so many questions about gear, and with all of the gear brands and options out there, purchasing hiking and backpacking gear can be incredibly overwhelming. My goal is to make it easier for all of you to navigate gear by featuring a different piece of gear every week.
This week I am talking about my Peak Design camera clip (https://amzn.to/3Uh4XX5). I have had this clip for my DSLR camera for a year and a half now, and it has been a life changing piece of gear for me and my hiking and backpacking trips! Before owning this clip, I would hold my huge DSLR camera in my hands while hiking, which is heavy, cumbersome and when you have to use your hands for climbing up mountains or over down trees, the camera just dangles around your neck. The Peak Design clip is easily attached to your backpack strap and a small piece is attached to the bottom of your camera, allowing it to slide easily in and out of the clip whenever you want to take a picture. It is quick and easy to use, and I no longer have to deal with my heavy camera dangling around my neck, or worry about accidentally dropping it or banging it against a rock. This clip is a must-have piece of gear if you have any type of camera that is not your phone!

While hiking down beautifully maintained trails, have you ever wondered "who maintains these and how can I help?" Well here is a list of amazing groups and organizations who always need volunteers to help with trail maintenance. You don't need any experience to join these groups, they want our help and are willing to teach everyone. Keep in mind that when trails don't get the maintenance they need every few years (some trails need it every year), they can easily disappear.

🔥It was suggested that as I re-hike trails that have burned over the years, that I should do a before and after post.
In September I went to check out the Big Bunchgrass area which is part of the Eugene to Crest Trail. A large potion of the Eugene to Crest Trail burned in the 2022 Cedar Creek Fire and the Bunchgrass Ridge and Big Bunchgrass burned pretty severely. There are some plants already growing back but much of it is thimbleberry which takes over the landscape quickly and fiercely. The trail tread through the forest is almost completely gone. The big meadow didn't burn so it looks exactly how it did before the fire and was a nice place to have lunch in the sun. I spoke with the Forest Service and was informed that restoration work on this trail will start in 2025 once the snow melts. Unfortunately they are not allowing for any volunteers on this particular project.
(Pre wildfire pictures are from November 2018 and post wildfire pictures are from September 2024).

⚠️WILDFIRE UPDATE
This is the last wildfire update that I am doing for the season. With the recent rains and higher elevation snow (above 3,800 feet elevation) it is unlikely that even the fires that are barely contained will continue to grow much more and will eventually just go out this winter.
