Ironman Western Australia 2024. My seventh full ironman. And probably the hardest. (After the first four, the pandemic got me out of a seven year hiatus to do x3 consecutively! - IMWA, Kona World Champs, IMWA 2022 - 2024)
I guess Covid gave me a re-boot. Now I think I need another re-boot!!
This edition was tough. The roughest 3.8km swim ever experienced (a roller coaster of buffeting waves)! and relentless winds on the 180km bike AND on the full marathon run. The only reprieve - and so thankful for that - was the cool weather. A hot sweltering day would have finished me off!!
Probably what saved my race was, not surprisingly, consistent training, without which I cannot imagine it being much fun at all. In fact with all that training, it was extremely tough going!! Everyone including the pros came in on slower timings (yet exceptional athletes still managed to PB or come close - huge kudos to them!) For me I stopped looking at the clock wayyy before the finish line.
I came in 12th in my age group & this time there was no roll down slot for Kona. C’est la vie - if it were easy, it wouldn’t be as meaningful nor significant. No doubt I will try again for that elusive spot which I am grateful everyday for having had the opportunity to experience, and which today continues to be life-changing in so many ways.
Grateful & blessed every day to be able to do this sport, which wrings so much out of you, and yet still keeps one coming back. Indeed I will be!

Plus iconic views of Mt Sakurajima active volcano & Mt Kaimon, historic Chiran Samurai village, rugged coastlines of tropical palm tree-lined Southern Japan, lush padi, tea plantations & forests. Of course post-ride onsens, local cuisine in authentic local establishments, beers & sake. And a bonus joyous display of breaching dolphins by the coast outside our hotel balconies.

Langkawi 70.3 gratitude list:
1. Bike arrived in time (though not with me)
2. Stomach was fine (no digestive issues)
3. Had a safe race (no crashes, no punctures)
4. Bike course was amazing (new inspiration for Jacqtours Langkawi!)
6. Awesome me time
7. Awesome time with friends (laugh a minute)
8. Met new friends (Daniela & James, Neville & Sonja and Sandra - may our paths cross again!)
9. Fantastic hotel stay (everything was perfect at the Bayou)
10. The biggest yay: a surprise age group win & qualification for the 70.3 World Championships next Nov in Marbella, Spain. It was not the run I would have liked with cramps galore but there are lessons there somewhere. Biggest one “just keep moving”?
Thank you race organisers for a well run event and congratulations everyone who qualified, finished, & braved the start.
