OCEAN SWIMMING in Apulia is determined besides the beach by wind direction: northerly wind: aye okay. When the Sirocco out of Africa`s Sahara desert is blowing, swimming is not recommended. Here a 60ies type beach bar in Uggiana la Chiesa.

APULIA impressions. Not as highly travelled as the Italian riviera or Tuscany, but definitely with its own charm!

LECCE on a sunny day. Beautiful Baroque town a little inland, not directly on the ocean. Also famous for its CARTAPESTE (papier-mâché art), developed during the 17th century, to make religious figures less heavy to carry around in the traditional holiday festivities and celebrations.

LECCE, Apulia, Italy, is a wonderful baroque university town. I was compelled to return later as during the first trip it was raining cats and dogs! Can also happen in October.

Swimming in October in Europe can look this good! Apulia breakfasts consist of lots of sweets and beautiful views.

Started in BARI and worked my way south all the way to the Capo Santo Maria de Leuca where some of the best sandy beaches begin, all the way up the western coast along the Ionian Sea. The area is called the Maledives of Italy.

CHARMING APULIA - Southern region, forming the heel of Italy’s “boot.” Whitewashed hill towns, curious Trulli houses with conical roofs, centuries-old farmland and hundreds of kilometers of Mediterranean coastline. Can still be warm enough to swim in the ocean until the end of October.

LUBRIANO is inhabited since PREHISTORIC times, as evidenced by findings of flint tools & remains of a small Bronze Age village! It underwent tumultuous upheavals throughout the ages by Etruscans, Romans, Goths & Byzantines, then Lombardian rule established until Barbarossa briefly conquered. In the fifteenth century Lubriano was occupied by the French troops of Charles VIII. Today, 900 villagers still call Lubriano home and if you check the Municipal website, they`re just organizing school access for all children living in this hilltop stone enclave! Amazing!

SIENA is right up there with Florence in beauty, culture and tradition. While Florence is known as THE renaissance city, Siena has retained its middle-age gothic architecture. Also famous for its horse races in the oval Piazza del Campo, what stands out is the UNBELIEVABLE SIENA CATHEDRAL! Completed in 1264, adorned by all the great masters of the time, the duomo is exceptional with stunning artwork on floors, walls, ceilings, in windows and just wherever you look. How it results in such a truly awe inspiring rather than overloading effect is a mystery, but despite the many visitors, there is definitely an ambiance of reverence throughout. An fascinating highlight!

RADICOFANI, 4 hrs. sw of Venice, exploring Tuscany from a small wine farm agroturismo stone cottage. Magnificent, rolling landscape, golden hills with quaint stone villages atop, some of Italy`s best wine, fresh food, very few tourists & amazing vistas, plus heat & sun!

1,200 (!) year-old nearby VENICE always charms, despite the crowds! Built on 100+ islands with canals connecting them, populated with vaporetti, gondolas and all kinds of boats the transport of necessity, "La Serenissima`s" history, culture and vibes are too multitudinous to list, though this website gives a good overview in a fun, non-overloading way: https://veneziaautentica.com/what-is-venice-italy/ Best you come and explore yourself! 😀

VICENZA, Italy: 50 min. train ride south of Verona-well worth the visit! Hardly any tourists but a gorgeous architectural (& shopping!) town, beautified by 16th century hometown architect Andrea Palladio, considered most influential in architectural history. Sought after for his country houses, he also designed astounding TEATRO OLIMPICO in 1580, the world`s first indoor masonry theatre! Interiors are of wood, stucco & plaster in an amazing three dimensional design. Highly recommended; on the UNESCO World Heritage List. See this link for more info: https://www.teatrolimpicovicenza.it/en/

VERONA, Italy: famous for the setting of Shakespeare’s "Romeo and Juliet" & the Arena, a well maintained 1st-century Roman amphitheater which hosts concerts and large-scale opera performances. Many more beautiful sites beyond the crowds: eg a stroll along river Adige or a view over the old towne from 84 m high Torre dei Lamberti. Construction started in 1172, in 1403 the tower was struck by lightning; restoration didn't start until 1448 and took 16 years. Well worth it, though!

The world is changing and so is Swiss Wanderlust

Physical travel has come to a halt in most regions of the globe. It`s a temporary halt, but while it lasts, why not enjoy some travel by mind and heart? Utilizing this forced curtailing of our regular, busy schedules to ponder, observe and think - lightly or deeply - but always with the aim of new possibilities, positive change and renewal.

To make the most of our time right now and so we`re ready to emerge purposefully into our busy schedules once we go forth again.

I invite you to share and participate with your observations, thoughts and insights. Please message me what you would like to share.

Happy Spring, good health & a joyous spirit to you!
