Flutes at the Barns Inspiring residential flute courses for adult players of all levels

Flutes at the Barns began in 2003 and - over forty residential courses - has developed a unique reputation for providing inspirational flute courses for adult players of any ability. Each course provides the opportunity for every participant to take part in flute playing activities in idyllic settings, whether in the UK or beyond. As well as considering the beautiful locations, venues for the cour

ses are chosen for their comfort, luxury and spaciousness/acoustic. Residential participants are accommodated individually on the same site as the musical activities, with private access to their own bathroom (non-playing partners are welcome to attend). All meals and refreshments are freshly and professionally provided; FATB has developed a deserved reputation for plentiful provision, with tasty menus chosen to reflect the tastes of participants and to include local produce (where possible), as well as taking dietary requirements into consideration. Each course is open to flute players of all standards and abilities, aged eighteen and over.

•UK residential courses are held during the week
•Residential courses held outside the UK mainland are longer, and include a range of short organised sightseeing trips as well as musical activities
•Flute Days are held on a day at the weekend

Flutes at the Barns courses each include a range of musical activities; whether you’re hoping to develop experience as a solo player or performer, enjoy playing with others in big or small groups, or you’re just hoping to absorb yourself in as many motivating ideas as possible, there is something to help you come away from the course exhilarated and eager for more playing. Individual schedules for courses vary, and include the following:

•group warm-ups with lots of hints and tips - a variety of ever-changing classes to ensure you go home with lots of ideas to help you continue to improve a range of technical aspects;
•ensemble playing in a variety of styles;
•chamber music with coaching;
•individual tuition with Zoё Booth;
•flute choir, featuring the opportunity to play piccolo, alto and/or bass;
•an individual rehearsal session with professional accompanist Rachael Buxton;
•musical/discussion workshops on techniques, repertoire and interpretative ideas;
•the chance to hear and participate in live performance and/or masterclass;
•a recital given by the course tutors...and much more

Since 2003 Flutes at the Barns courses have developed to cultivate a non-competitive, sociable and encouraging atmosphere with a focus on excellent, all-inclusive music-making, expert tuition, good food and good company. Over thirteen years, an incredible amount of experience and numerous returning players to date, Flutes at the Barns has proved to be exceptional in its value for money, exclusivity and level of involvement for all performers!

Happy Thursday everyone! The countdown continues... so what does t2 mean to Flutes at the Barns? When we host our residential courses for adult musicians, there are two types of course to choose from - both are packed with satisfying and beneficial musical experiences and opportunities, held in lovely venues (as you saw yesterday), with private accommodation and bathroom and a private chef to take care of us all. We have courses that are open to players of all levels, usually with 8 places available, to maximise contact time with tutors. We also run Special Edition courses, which are aimed at places of sufficient standard to benefit from the longer performance opportunities and who feel confident contributing to ensemble playing without further support on their line - only 6 places are available on those. So now you know! Everyone gets an individual lesson with our fabulous FATB tutor, as well as individual rehearsal time with an amazing accompanist - so which will you choose?

We always ask our adult musicians to feedback on their musical experience (see below) of Flutes at the Barns residential courses, and rate them out of five; we love that we're still getting an average of 5 out of 5 after 21 years! Thanks to our 5/5 participants!

Individual flute lesson: "I was extremely nervous initially as I have only played in front of my current teacher and it has took me months to feel comfortable in front of her. I was made to feel really at ease within the first five minutes of my lesson and and had been encouraged and given a couple of pointers that immediately changed my playing thus giving me the confidence to keep practicing and applying the points and I would succeed, and with the practice over the next few days, I found my confidence and whole attitude had changed from can’t do to can do" 5/5

Individual accompanist rehearsal: "It is so invaluable to have the opportunity to play one's music with an accompanist and the accompanist is so supportive and helpful, and knowledgeable. Just a great opportunity" 5/5

Warm-up sessions: "Loved them - more please!" 5/5

Flute choir sessions: "They were excellent. Thank you for your great conducting skills and helping me come in at the right time for the solo bits!" 5/5

Chamber music: "Fantastic to work with some many talented people and work together for a successful performance" 5/5

Masterclasses: "Excellent opportunities for us all to perform, listen and learn all together. I felt that I enjoyed this performance opportunity most on this course. It is also great to hear the exciting repertoire which other people play."

Today we're delighted to share photos from another happy week of Flutes at the Barns - this time, at Cliff House at beautiful Monsal Head! It's such a privilege to spend time with an amazing group of musicians, who have also been great company. Everyone pushed themselves to share such musical passion, and congratulations all round are warmly deserved! We did - as usual - celebrate this with bubbles on the last night... of course!
