Flutes at the Barns Inspiring residential flute courses for adult players of all levels

Flutes at the Barns began in 2003 and - over forty residential courses - has developed a unique reputation for providing inspirational flute courses for adult players of any ability. Each course provides the opportunity for every participant to take part in flute playing activities in idyllic settings, whether in the UK or beyond. As well as considering the beautiful locations, venues for the cour

ses are chosen for their comfort, luxury and spaciousness/acoustic. Residential participants are accommodated individually on the same site as the musical activities, with private access to their own bathroom (non-playing partners are welcome to attend). All meals and refreshments are freshly and professionally provided; FATB has developed a deserved reputation for plentiful provision, with tasty menus chosen to reflect the tastes of participants and to include local produce (where possible), as well as taking dietary requirements into consideration. Each course is open to flute players of all standards and abilities, aged eighteen and over.

•UK residential courses are held during the week
•Residential courses held outside the UK mainland are longer, and include a range of short organised sightseeing trips as well as musical activities
•Flute Days are held on a day at the weekend

Flutes at the Barns courses each include a range of musical activities; whether you’re hoping to develop experience as a solo player or performer, enjoy playing with others in big or small groups, or you’re just hoping to absorb yourself in as many motivating ideas as possible, there is something to help you come away from the course exhilarated and eager for more playing. Individual schedules for courses vary, and include the following:

•group warm-ups with lots of hints and tips - a variety of ever-changing classes to ensure you go home with lots of ideas to help you continue to improve a range of technical aspects;
•ensemble playing in a variety of styles;
•chamber music with coaching;
•individual tuition with Zoё Booth;
•flute choir, featuring the opportunity to play piccolo, alto and/or bass;
•an individual rehearsal session with professional accompanist Rachael Buxton;
•musical/discussion workshops on techniques, repertoire and interpretative ideas;
•the chance to hear and participate in live performance and/or masterclass;
•a recital given by the course tutors...and much more

Over thirteen years, an incredible amount of experience and numerous returning players to date, Flutes at the Barns has proved to be exceptional in its value for money, exclusivity and level of involvement for all performers!

Happy Thursday everyone! The countdown continues... so what does t2 mean to Flutes at the Barns? When we host our residential courses for adult musicians, there are two types of course to choose from - both are packed with satisfying and beneficial musical experiences and opportunities, held in lovely venues (as you saw yesterday), with private accommodation and bathroom and a private chef to take care of us all. We have courses that are open to players of all levels, usually with 8 places available, to maximise contact time with tutors. We also run Special Edition courses, which are aimed at places of sufficient standard to benefit from the longer performance opportunities and who feel confident contributing to ensemble playing without further support on their line - only 6 places are available on those. So now you know! Everyone gets an individual lesson with our fabulous FATB tutor, as well as individual rehearsal time with an amazing accompanist - so which will you choose?

We always ask our adult musicians to feedback on their musical experience (see below) of Flutes at the Barns residential courses, and rate them out of five; we love that we're still getting an average of 5 out of 5 after 21 years! Thanks to our 5/5 participants!

Individual flute lesson: "I was extremely nervous initially as I have only played in front of my current teacher and it has took me months to feel comfortable in front of her. I was made to feel really at ease within the first five minutes of my lesson and and had been encouraged and given a couple of pointers that immediately changed my playing thus giving me the confidence to keep practicing and applying the points and I would succeed, and with the practice over the next few days, I found my confidence and whole attitude had changed from can’t do to can do" 5/5

Individual accompanist rehearsal: "It is so invaluable to have the opportunity to play one's music with an accompanist and the accompanist is so supportive and helpful, and knowledgeable. Just a great opportunity" 5/5

Warm-up sessions: "Loved them - more please!" 5/5

Flute choir sessions: "They were excellent. Thank you for your great conducting skills and helping me come in at the right time for the solo bits!" 5/5

Chamber music: "Fantastic to work with some many talented people and work together for a successful performance" 5/5

Masterclasses: "Excellent opportunities for us all to perform, listen and learn all together. I felt that I enjoyed this performance opportunity most on this course. It is also great to hear the exciting repertoire which other people play."

Since our last post, plenty of wonderful music has been happening in the world of Flutes at the Barns! Online masterclasses consisting entirely of repertoire by female composers inspired us all on Friday 6th October; another online masterclass last Friday featured music by Bozza, Poulenc, Bach and Hue, delicious; we've also just unpacked from the Flute Day at Trestle Arts Base yesterday, what a terrific and joy-filled day! You'll be amazed how much we packed in, which you can read about by visiting the news part of the FATB website: http://www.flutesatthebarns.com/latest-news.html

To take part in the next FATB events - in person or online - stay in touch by joining the mailing list; the theme of the next masterclasses (to be held on 17th November) will be Story and Musical Description, so enjoy your practice!

Pictures tell a thousand words, so we'll let these photos from the Special Edition Flutes at the Barns residential course last week do the talking! Those taking part brought along the most magnificent repertoire which they performed so brilliantly in the daily concerts with accompanist-extraordinaire Rachael! The weather was terrific, and there was lots of laughter, a busy array of classes, lessons and masterclasses and calm in their turn - just perfect for celebrating twenty years - yes folks, TWENTY YEARS - of FATB! A huge lot of love to everyone who views these, and particularly to the participants of FATB September 2023!

If you are an adult flute player and would like to attend a Flutes at the Barns residential course next month, there is a place for you to become one of the participants from 4th to 8th September! We would love to welcome you!

With all of next year's residential courses already filled, this is an amazing last-minute opportunity! Yes, it’s really true, you could be joining the course (along with five other participants) as early as next month! The course will be held at the beautiful Cliff House in the Peak District, a magnificently located and luxurious property which is the setting for the Special Edition courses, as this one is - you can read all about what that means by visiting the course page here: http://www.flutesatthebarns.com/september-2023-cliff-house.html

The participants of FATB September 2023 will receive their ensemble parts at the start of next week (getting a look at that ahead of the course is just another benefit of the Special Edition status!), and – if you’ve got one, two three or even four pieces that you’d like to develop during the week and maybe even share with others in the supportive performance opportunities (no pressure of course) – then this course is for you! All other music for the technical classes and workshops is provided at the time. Get ready for a special FATB atmosphere!

For more details and/or to book your place, please visit the course page above and apply, or simply email [email protected] - your application will be confirmed right away.

Plans have been secretly hatching for a while at FATB HQ for next year’s courses, and – having assembled the fantastic FATB teams and venues for each course – we’re nearly ready to release details so that you can apply for 2024! We can’t wait to welcome you.

As a result of limited places and oversubscription for FATB residential courses in recent years, applications for 2024 will be accepted using a new way of booking, with the aim of reducing the stress of trying to book quickly and maximise the opportunities for as many flute players as possible to attend the courses. Here’s how it works:

The booking period will be open for two weeks, between Saturday 24th June and Saturday 8th July.

• During this time, please apply for any of the four courses to be held in 2024 using the 2024 application form (which you can connect to from the top of any of the individual course pages), indicating your preference if you would like to attend more than one.
• There is no rush; courses will not be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis during this booking period.
• In the case of oversubscription, applicants for each of the courses will have an equal opportunity to be drawn at random for a place on the course of their first choice - FATB will inform successful participants by the end of Sunday 9th July.
• If not drawn for their preferred course, an applicants' name will be added to the draw for their subsequently preferred courses and/or added to the waiting list as a reserve for their preferred course, as appropriate.
• Any courses which are not full will be shown clearly on the website after the booking period has closed, at which point applications will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis once again.

Join the mailing list to be alerted as to when booking will open, or visit https://www.flutesatthebarns.com/

Just a few more updates on FATB March 2023 - so, how did the participants find the course? (Aww, you guys?!)

"So much variety with warmups covering technical issues, chamber music, individual lesson and time to work with accompanist. 5 [out of 5]. Brilliantly timetabled."

"Excellent opportunity to perform within such a supportive group. Some courses only provide one opportunity at the end of the week; there were daily options which really helps to build confidence. I enjoyed hearing other repertoire; the list sent of this at the end of the course was really helpful. Thank you."

"Such an encouraging and supportive experience from Zoe and Rachel, but also from the other course participants. The organisation was exemplary."

"Just to say a big thank you. I would like to come again!"
