📷 36 hours in Stone Town 🌅

Stone Town was our least favorite part of the trip to Tanzania. But it definitely had its photogenic corners. It was VERY busy (think parking lot level traffic), and many of the historic buildings were not preserved well and in ruins. It was encouraging to hear that some were undergoing renovation/restoration. There was also a ton of trash and rats 🐀 😭 and people aggressively trying to sell you things or “help you” find where you’re going in exchange for money. The food was also not great at our hotel (though served in beautiful settings).

The best part of our pit stop in Stone Town before flying back to the US was the chance to learn about Zanzibar’s fascinating history. Zanzibar was under Portuguese, Omani and British rule at times.

Two tours we did:
🏰 Palace tours: while most of the palaces were in complete ruins, the most recent house of the Sultan of Oman was still intact and the tour’s information was very interesting. We saw the birthplace of Princess Salme, a rebellious daughter of the sultan who taught herself how to write (and eventually fled to Germany). This tour cost $35USD for two with taxis.

⛪️ The old slave market. The market has been replaced by a church, so this one was also more about hearing the history as not much was physically preserved. We didn’t know a lot about the Arabs’ East African slave trade to the Middle East, since it’s not something we study much in America. The museum is free to enter (just tip the guide) and has a room with detailed history written in timeline format. Definitely recommend taking time to go while in Zanzibar as the slave trade is central to the island’s history.

Underrated ski destination of our 2-week trip goes to… Ogden, Utah! We booked an entire adorable house on Airbnb for ~$100 a night and were able to easily drive up to in less than 30 minutes. The mountain was impressively uncrowded for an Ikon Pass resort and we lucked out with 10” of fresh snow on our first day in town. The skiing was pretty good but the real WOW factor of Snowbasin is in the lodges… these places are beyond fancy, apparently jazzed up for the 2002 Olympics. We’re talking golden chandeliers, magnificent fireplaces and luxurious lunch options like prime rib and croque monsieur. Even the toilets and faucets in the restroom were gold. It seriously felt like we were skiing at the Ritz Carlton. If you visit, make sure to splurge on a grilled cheese at the Overlook Bar at Needles Lodge & then grab a beer and tasty cheeseburger from the cash only in nearby Huntsville to counter the $$$ on-resort meals 🙌🏻
