What is Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease(RHD)?
~It is highly infectious and often fatal condition that largely affects wild rabbits, but can also be spread to domestic rabbits.
~RHDV is the infectious virus responsible, which attacks the rabbits internal organs causing them haemmorhage.
~It can easily be transmitted between rabbits by direct contact,or via the droppings of an infected rabbits.
~ The disease presents no risk to humans.

Symptoms

Sudden death may occur with no clinical signs. However, when symptoms do show one of the first signs is a high
Fever,as well as:
~ Lethargy
~ Diffficulty in breathing
~ Loss of appetite
~ Blood in discharge from nose or mouth
~ Lack of coordination

Rabbits that contract the disease have a low chance of surviving and even if they do,they remain carriers so need to be kept away from other animals and rabbits.

Prevention
~ Vaccinate your rabbits
~ Hygiene (biosecurity)
~ Wash your hands before handling your rabbit
~ keep your rabbits living areas clean and regularly disinfect them
~ Quarantine any new rabbits before introducing them

Can Rabbits Eat Rice Hay?
Rice straw hay is very poor from a nutritional point of view.It has very low crude protein and metabolizable energy values and higher levels of fiber. These protein levels, added to the high fiber values do not allow efficient use of and reduce consumption. Therefore,in this case this type of hay is to be fed to the rabbit,it is necessary to balance the diet with protein pellets and /or grains.
It is well known that hay is the basis of of rabbit’s diet, but there are different kinds of hay and not all are equally nutritious. It is not recommended as food due to its nutritional deficiencies.
Rabbits can eat rice hay,but it is not recommended to give it as a base feed ,the low amount of vitamins and minerals and also low digestibility make rice hay a very poor feed which should be used as a complement to other nutritious feeds.
The rice hay is low in protein and minerals but high in fiber. The fact it has a high fiber content is not positive from nutritional point of view, but it also contains a high silica content, which negatively affects the digestibility of the straw.Rice hay is very deficient in macro minerals such as phosphorus, calcium and sodium which are essential for the development of the rabbits. There is also a great deficiency of vitamin A,which helps the development of healthy teeth, bone and soft tissues.
In summary the 4 main deficiencies of rice straw as feeds are as follows:
*High fiber
*High silica
*Low digestibility
*Low amount of minerals and vitamin A

Feeding Rabbits and Getting it Right

Feeding the correct diet is probably the single most important means of having a healthy and long-lived rabbit.Approximately 85% of a rabbits diet should be grass/good quality hay,10% leafy green vegetables and only 5%pellets or nuggets.
The best diet for rabbits is one that mimics their natural grass-based diet in the wild as closely as possible.

Kits Tattooing.

1. Litters are tattooed w/the first letter of the Sire and Dam followed by numbers.
2. Does are given a names that start with the letters of alphabet.Buck names start with any letter as long as it haven’t used for another buck.

For example:
Hans (Buck) is bred to Ardenne(Doe)they have a litter 8 kits.
ID numbers for the kits are;
HA1,HA2,HA3,HA4,HA5,HA6,HA7 & HA8.In order of weight at weaning.(Heaviest to Lightest)
If Hans and Ardenne need again, their next litter would be HA9,HA10 etc…

If you have only one set of number pins, just skip the double numbers like;11,22,33 etc…

This method can tell how closely related two rabbits are by their tattoo.HA3 should not be bred with HA15 because they are siblings.HA3 and HD5 are half siblings.

HA3 and LB4 would probably make a good breeding pair.Aso by tattooing in order of weight,we will know that HA1 was the biggest kit of weaning.

For fast growing litters,HA1 is probably better choice for a herd buck than HA8 who was the smallest at weaning.

3. 6-8 weeks old you can tattoo your rabbit in their left ear.
