a wild barn owl hunting on land near my home
The wild peregrine decided to come for a nosey today
Hugo is settling in very well, 48 hours ago this peregrine hadn't seen a human and is already feeding and settled
Well here's Rio the perlin now flying really well... He keeps chasing things and when he misses he doesn't half get angry
This is a wild peregrine falcon coming in on the dive, now last year we had a wild one hunting over our working pointer dogs and the news travelled Europe fast! We have our fingers crossed this is him and hopefully get some footage again and share some fantastic footage with you lot and maybe this time the chap from the BBC will make it in time to film before the breeding season starts and he disappears again... Hope you enjoy
Today here at RapidRaptors it's been a sad and happy day concerning wild birds of prey. A friend who I fly birds with got a call about a kestrel eating a kestrel in a local quarry ( we knew there was a late clutch of youngsters at this quarry). On arrival all the kestrel chicks was out the nest site and sadly yes one was dead and one was trying to eat it so we knew something wasn't right. The chick was picked up and put back in the nest hole on the quarry face but it soon jumped back out. As it landed on the floor the other living chick was spotted so we later returned with food for these birds as they was hungry. Luckily we got food next to them and they went mad eating it so we let them feed and caught them up and luckily got them both back in the nest with some extra reserve food. We have only see the male ( dad) kestrel around for a few days so we are thinking the worst now and he's obviously struggling. Another friend went up before dark and they was still happily say in the nest so we will return first light with more food. This is natures tough test, we didn't remove them from here as dad is still feeding them and just needs a helping hand and kestrels are not the easiest to rehabilitate back to the wild as the parents have to learn them skills of hunting ect so we will play mum instead for a few days until they are old enough and strong enough to fledge. Here's a little clip of the first chick that was found.
Another hard nature fact of 2015 is early this year a vole count was done and it was the highest it's ever been but 2 weeks ago another was done and it's at one of its lowest ever! Going to see hard times this year for lots of different wild predators.
