Very sad news!

It is with sad regret that we share the news that Christine, the female Southern White Rhino at Lusaka National Park, unfortunately died earlier this month. If you have visited the rhino enclosure recently you might have noticed that she had lost weight and was not her normally, friendly self.

A few weeks ago there had been an incident between her and her male companion, Thabo. His natural instincts to protect his territory led to him attacking her, inflicting a deep internal wound. Despite round the clock care by her Scouts, and treatments from the DNPW Vet, with medicines being donated by local HWPOs, the wound wouldn’t heal and she lost condition, sadly succumbing to her injury.

The relocation and welfare of large mammals in new environments is never simple – there are many factors that can affect their health and day to day behaviours. In the wild male rhinos are known to be very territorial, and will protect their own domain through aggressive behaviours – even with the more social white rhinoceros species, males are known to aggressively attack, and fatally injure, a female rhino, who is less well equipped to defend herself.

Christine was a gift to the Park from South Africa and was a firm favourite at the enclosure – she was always first at the gate to go out grazing in the mornings and enjoyed meeting and getting lots of attention from visitors. She will be greatly missed by the Scouts who cared for her.

We will keep you updated on how Thabo is now doing and you can also visit him every weekend at the rhino feeding enclosure in the Park.
