Our first Riding Mountain Artist-in-Residence for 2024 is lyric worker, educator and editor Sandy Pool! 🏞️ During their time in the Deep Bay Cabin, they'll be working on their third book: "If Body: Freedom," a book of lyric and personal essays about institutions and grief.

"My writing is deeply informed by place, so I'm always excited to learn more about places and how places are changed by the movement of people," Sandy says. "I'm really excited to learn more about Riding Mountain as a place. I'd also love to learn more about animals, plants and other natural features of the park."

Notre toute première artiste en résidence au Mont-Riding pour 2024 est l'artiste lyrique, éducatrice et éditrice Sandy Pool ! 🏞️ Pendant son séjour au chalet Deep Bay, iel travaillera sur son troisième livre : « If Body : Freedom", un ouvrage d'essais lyriques et personnels sur les institutions et le deuil.

« Mon travail d'écrivaine est profondément imprégné de mon sens des lieux; je suis donc toujours ravie d'en apprendre davantage sur les lieux et comment ces lieux sont transformés par les déplacements des populations », dit Sandy. « J'ai vraiment hâte d'en savoir plus sur le parc national au Mont-Riding en tant que lieu. Be bear-aware! These adorable creatures can be found in various locations, so it's important to maintain a safe distance if you encounter them. Keep a minimum distance of 30 meters (equivalent to the length of three buses). Bears are easily startled, so it's wise to generate ample noise while hiking along trails. If bears come across human food, they may become dependent on it and pose a danger to humans.

Every once in a while we receive unusual calls for help. This time it was for an injured, fully grown Bald Eagle. 🦅

This eagle was clearly in distress. The Resource Conservation staff quickly took the bird under their wing 😉and drove it to -Haven-Rehabilitation-Centre. This centre will provide the necessary lifesaving expertise and care that this special patient needs.
