Press release: 30th /10/2024 Tourism Stakeholders Meeting Report

On the 28th of October 2024, the Barbuda Council’s Tourism Committee held the first in a series of planned engagements with the stakeholders who underpin the Barbuda Tourism Experience. The purpose of the engagement is to:
• Raise awareness of the need to restore Barbuda Tourism to levels already affected by the pre-hurricane disaster.
• Restore management practices that are required to safeguard and sustain the industry.
• Inform the key stakeholders (tour operators, guides and taxi operators) of the need to organize and officially register their operations to protect the integrity of the Ecotourism businesses from unauthorized encroachment.
• Get feedback and ideas on how we can best take control, restore and sustainably enhance Barbuda Tourism for the benefit of present and future generations.

20 people attended the meeting chaired by Tourism Lead Mrs. Nadia George and included at the head table, Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries & Marine Resources Lead Mr. John Mussington. Mrs. George presented the background and purpose of the engagement while Mr. Mussington provided the participants with a detailed account of the creation of the Ecotourism industry in Barbuda, how it was managed and the benefits it brought to the community. All participants were able to interact and discuss matters raised. This interaction served to raise awareness of the value of what Barbudans were able to create and manage; More importantly, that together we can regain and increase the benefits.
