Leg-rowing is a traditional fishing technique of the Intha people, and is believed to date back to the 12th century.

As the lake is covered by reeds and floating plants, standing provides the rower a better view beyond the reeds. Using their legs to row, frees their hands and allows them to handle the fishing nets.

The jackass penguin is also known as the African penguin 🐧. Each of these common names describes something about the species. It makes a sound similar to a donkey’s call, and it is the only species of penguin that nests in Africa.

Jackass penguin populations are decreasing, and scientists consider the species to be endangered. Experts believe this is a result of decreasing amounts of their fish prey due to overfishing; damage to nests resulting from guano mining, tourism, and direct egg collection; as well as oil spills.
