Hello friends

Our 11-year run renting out Oak Valley Cabin is coming to an end this year. We have decided to move into Oak Valley Cabin ourselves and sell our larger neighbouring cottage. We'll post a link when it goes live.

Renting was such a positive experience for us and we very much enjoyed meeting so many wonderful people - some of whom have returned year after year. We will miss seeing you.

Thanks for the memories!

Best regards
Lynda and Mike

Deer fur has changed colour in the past couple of weeks from reddish-brown to a grey-brown. The darker fur absorbs more sunlight to help keep them warm in the cooler months.

When we bought the Cabin, there was only a composting toilet, a rusty metal shower stall that blocked the window, and a hot water heater in the corner. It was a very cramped space. We decided we'd gut bathroom and put in a holding tank, but soon found out that our Township was no longer allowing them, so up went our budget!

Anyone who has stayed at the cabin knows there is a LOT of rock (Canadian Shield) and because of that, it was quite an experience excavating to install a septic system. Luckily, no major problems arose that the heavy equipment couldn't handle. We did have a lot of rubble to deal with, and the slope adjacent to the bunkie between our two properties is where all the rubble is piled, but you'd never know it now. We also had to remove about a dozen trees and move power lines, and jump through many hoops to meet area environmental guidelines and codes.

Going Inside now ... by removing a closet from the adjacent bedroom we were able to enlarge the bathroom by 16". We moved a doorway, and reconfigured both rooms to how they are today. The feature wall in the bathroom and the knee wall in the kitchen is left over vintage barnwood from the bunkie build. The next story will be about the kitchen.

OAK VALLEY CABIN WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR RENT IN 2021

We have just finished prepping the cottages for their long Winter rest. Waterlines are pulled, boats are put away, fridges are emptied, and power turned off. 2020 marked our 14th year on Upper Rock Lake ... and what a year it was. Two weeks before our first guest was to arrive, we didn’t even know if there would be a season, on top of which we hadn’t even seen the cottages since the previous November. But, the government lifted the short-term rental restrictions just in time and we managed to get things ready and adjust and adapt to new ways of doing things. We are so grateful that our guests were so understanding and accommodating and the season went swimmingly (a little cottage joke there).

Since we’re already getting booking requests for next year, it feels like the right time to let you know that we have decided to take 2021 off from the cottage rental business. After this past year, and not knowing what next year will bring, we’ve decided to use the time to tackle the numerous jobs that we don’t get the chance to do when the buildings are occupied and the weather is good, like build new docks, painting, and things like that.

We may leave our Cottages in Canada page active in the sense that it will be visible, but not bookable, because we don’t want to lose all our wonderful reviews that people so kindly took the time to write.

We will miss seeing you next year, and send our heartfelt wishes for your safety and good health as we pass through this challenging time towards brighter days.

Warm regards
Lynda & Mike Johnston

Anyone who has visited Upper Rock Lake and area knows how beautiful, peaceful and full of wildlife it is. It's largely because it's in the Frontenac Arch, which is a biosphere of wildlife, flora and fauna, which stretches from Algonquin Park down to the Adirondack mountains. About half of our lake is protected by the Nature Conservancy of Ontario and other lands are being purchased for the same purpose. If you would like to see the video, see the picture below for the YouTube link. It's better than anything else on Netflix these days!
