When it comes to travel, it can be hard to understand how pricing works. For some things, prices stay the same, no matter when you book. Most hotel rooms and tours are going to be this way.
There are a few instances where we experience what is called dynamic pricing though, and those are what you want to look out for!
The first is airline tickets. This one is more widely known about outside of the travel industry, and also impacts almost all people. Pricing for flights can fluctuate from day to day, and even hour to hour. If an airline has demand, their flight prices will go up. A great example of this is flights to Europe this summer. There is SO much going on in Europe (I'm looking at you, Taylor Swift) this summer, so flight prices are especially high. Even if you're not planning on going to Paris for the Olympics, it will still likely be more expensive than the same time last year, because of that demand. Prices also tend to fluctuate based on how far out you are from your trip.
While no one really knows the exact science to purchasing your flights, everyone thinks they know a secret to getting the best price (like booking on Tuesdays or six weeks out from your travel dates).
The second, slightly more predictable type of dynamic pricing in the travel industry is cruise fares. If you have a cruise itinerary in mind, it is most likely going to be the cheapest for you to book when the itinerary is first released. As more people book, and the ship fills up, the prices for those remaining cabins goes up, as well. A perfect example of this is Disney Cruise Line. When bookings open for Pearl Castaway Members, the price is the lowest it is going to be. By the time the bookings open for the general public, prices are not only higher, but the most sought after cabins are likely also already sold out.
