To all the mob on my feed:

The next few days may be tough - particularly following such a tough year in 2023.

Nasty voices are feeling empowered and as tho there are no consequences to their actions - this can be really tough.

If any of you are having a tough time and need a yarn, feel free to send me a message and I'll call ya to chat.

You can also call professionals with culturally appropriate knowledge at:

And a Murri Koorimas to everyone

15/10/2023

It's been a emotionally tumultuous 48 hours for me:
Friday I was down as I accepted we'd lost the referendum
Saturday I was really quite down
Saturday night about 7pm, I was angry
By 8pm I was just determined. Fired up to continue to make change.

I want to thank all the people involved in the Yes campaigns from the beginning, particularly the leaders who put so much if themselves on the line.👏🏾

I want to send my gratitude to the Allies, particularly those who walked the talk and volunteered their time and energy - but to all of you who voted YES.🙏🏾

I want to send my love and healing to mob who are struggling right now - knowing why but not understanding or believing how it could be so. 🙌🏾

It's a big blow, but this is how it's been for us for 235 years. It will always be like this. We will lose many battles. We will win a few. We will keep fighting.

My great teacher, Uncle Max Dulumunmun used to say:
"I had to take the long road to get there - couldn't of made it any other way" he would say. It's the same for us now. It's the long road, but its a journey we will not give up on.

Uncle Max would also say:
"You gotta give it away to keep it!"
And I take his lead. I will continue to help people to see the beauty and value of our cultures by teaching them to understand it. I will continue to be the cultural interpreter till orgs and individuals have the skills and the confidence to engage directly successfully with Traditional Custodians - with patience, tolerance and respect.

I will not give up.
I will not be silent.
I am still here and you will hear my voice!!!

🙌🏾❤️💛🖤🙏🏾

My statement supporting a YES vote for the Voice

We're one week out from the referendum to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Constitution and creating a platform to provide informed advice on solutions that will finally help mob - and through that, help the whole country.

We're 235 years in to using policy and program approaches to 'solve' Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; approaches that have never included us because no one spoke to us in a culturally appropriate way that elicits culturally workable solutions - as such those approaches have never worked.

For all of that 235 years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have suffered wide-ranging racism, violence and systemic discrimination across the entire spectrum of social justice issues: including having children stolen or being stolen from their families - for your info, this continues to happen today with more kids being taken from community than ever before.

These actions - many still ongoing - have left a legacy of disadvantage suffered more acutely by Indigenous Australians than by any other segment of the nation.

Despite some well-intentioned people and programs, progress toward reducing the negative outcomes, there has been no real progress - at the very least since ATSIC was dismantled with the stroke of a pen by then PM John Howard.

The reason for lack of progress? No one involves Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' ideas in the solutions.

Its simple project or program management - key stakeholders in any solution need to be the experts. WE are the experts on ourselves, on the solutions that will work and how best to implement them.

Not only are WE the cultural experts, among our ranks are western trained experts in every area of social justice and remote community access. People like, Tracey Westerman (mental health), Davis (education), Steffensen (land management), mcavoy (law and lore) - just name a few of thousands.

Don't listen to the lies of the negative campaign. It WILL save money in the long run, it WILL NOT cost you money or land or anything else except empathy. It WILL lead to quicker and better solutions, including Treaty and Truth, but also lower incarceration rates, lower death in custody rates, lower infant mortality rates, higher school completion rates, better health and longer life expectancy!

Involve us! It will lead to better outcomes for Aboroginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples- and for the entire country.

Involve us! Vote Yes!!

This 👇🏾 fella had an amazing influence on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country - and across the world.

He was the essence of PTR (patience, tolerance and respect); he was a truth teller through song and story. Always honest and humble.

His was a journey no one would want to take - but one so many did take against their will. He took all that had happened to him and presented it back to us like a bright tradgic mirror.

He will be missed as he takes his next joureny to the land of our ancestors - joined again with his greatest love, Aunty Ruby Hunter - who has continued to support him from that place while waiting patiently for his arrival.

Rest in Power and Peace Unc - know you made a difference 🙌🏾 🖤💛❤️

A STATEMENT BY AMOS AND EBAN ROACH ON BEHALF OF THE ROACH FAMILY

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Gunditjmara (Kirrae Whurrong/Djab Wurrung), Bundjalung Senior Elder, songman and storyteller Archie Roach.

Archie passed, surrounded by his family and loved ones, at Warrnambool Base Hospital after a long illness. We thank all the staff who have cared for Archie over the past month.

Archie wanted all of his many fans to know how much he loves you for supporting him along the way.

We are so proud of everything our dad achieved in his remarkable life. He was a healer and unifying force. His music brought people together.

A private ceremony will follow.

We ask that the media please respect the family’s privacy.

Archie’s sons, Amos and Eban Roach, have given permission for Archie’s name, image and music to be used, so that his legacy will continue to inspire.

Uncle Max was my most respected Lore man and Elder. He espoused Respect, Patience, Tolerance - but the most important was Respect. Respect for each other but primarily for Traditional Owners of the land you are on. He also taught us that nothing could be without permission of TOs - it's the proper way.

Message from Aunty Matilda House-Williams RE fire at Old Parliament House:

As a Ngambri Ngunnawal Elder and having been there in 1972 with my brothers Crow and Arnold to assist in establishing the Aboriginal Tent Embassy with Bertie Williams, Billy Craigie and Tony Coorey, I am hurt to see the actions of the protestors on the steps of old Parliament House today.

As custodians of the ACT and surrounding region, my family are always open for respectful dialogue, to support and take care of the many men, women and their families that find themselves here on our beautiful Lands.

I am disappointed these protestors chose to disregard cultural protocols and not communicate with myself or other Elders of my family.

These behaviours today do not represent the Aboriginal community here and it doesn’t reflect the vision and families that have held the space at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy for almost 50 years.

Take care of each other now, love Aunty Matilda.

On this very day, the 23rd of August 1966, Vincent Lingiari bravely led 200 stockmen and their families off the Wave Hill Station. What was firstly a protest against poor conditions and pay, soon became an even bigger battle to take back their land and live on it their way. These courageous men and women did this for all of us. And on this day we thank and honour them for the many sacrifices they made.

This image of old Vincent with the then Prime Minister Gough Whitlam has come to symbolise what can occur when people decide together they want change and are willing to struggle long and hard to make it happen. It brings our community so much pride.

All these years later, we still gather every August to commemorate and celebrate our Gurindji story in the birthplace of Land Rights. While Freedom Day Festival is now officially cancelled for 2021, our community will make sure we show our respects to our Elders today in a small but significant way.

We're sad Freedom Day Festival is not on this year, but we hope to see all our visitors in 2022. 🖤💛❤️
