My statement supporting a YES vote for the Voice
We're one week out from the referendum to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Constitution and creating a platform to provide informed advice on solutions that will finally help mob - and through that, help the whole country.
We're 235 years in to using policy and program approaches to 'solve' Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; approaches that have never included us because no one spoke to us in a culturally appropriate way that elicits culturally workable solutions - as such those approaches have never worked.
For all of that 235 years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have suffered wide-ranging racism, violence and systemic discrimination across the entire spectrum of social justice issues: including having children stolen or being stolen from their families - for your info, this continues to happen today with more kids being taken from community than ever before.
These actions - many still ongoing - have left a legacy of disadvantage suffered more acutely by Indigenous Australians than by any other segment of the nation.
Despite some well-intentioned people and programs, progress toward reducing the negative outcomes, there has been no real progress - at the very least since ATSIC was dismantled with the stroke of a pen by then PM John Howard.
The reason for lack of progress? No one involves Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' ideas in the solutions.
Its simple project or program management - key stakeholders in any solution need to be the experts. WE are the experts on ourselves, on the solutions that will work and how best to implement them.
Not only are WE the cultural experts, among our ranks are western trained experts in every area of social justice and remote community access. People like, Tracey Westerman (mental health), Davis (education), Steffensen (land management), mcavoy (law and lore) - just name a few of thousands.
Don't listen to the lies of the negative campaign. It WILL save money in the long run, it WILL NOT cost you money or land or anything else except empathy. It WILL lead to quicker and better solutions, including Treaty and Truth, but also lower incarceration rates, lower death in custody rates, lower infant mortality rates, higher school completion rates, better health and longer life expectancy!
Involve us! It will lead to better outcomes for Aboroginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples- and for the entire country.
Involve us! Vote Yes!!
