Update From The Bridge: Out of Saint Augustine, through Palm Valley and to the northern reaches of Floridaâs east coast on our last day of cruising for a bit. Great conditions, a well running OLOH, a happy Jasper and Crew... what more could we ask for? Well, a little entertainment from a boating doofus as you will seeâŠ
Update From The Bridge: OLOH is back underway, bound for St Augustine which you canât get to on the AICW without passing through the notorious Matanzas Inlet area. But it is truly stress free with (yes, another shoutout to) Aqua Map.
Itâs a super gusty day but great, as always, being on the water. OLOH is performing perfectly and, most importantly, Jasper is happy!
Report from the bridge: OLOH is running great and weâre pressing on before preparing to sit still while some weather blows through. Enjoying a lovely ride from Titusville through New Smyrna Beach and beyond and so happy to have Aqua Map at the helm as we move through a few problem areas in this stretch that would otherwise be much more stressful. Also a big thanks to Robert Sherer for popping by OLOH to say hi - always great to see you Bob and our continued gratitude for all you do to make ICW boating safer.
Hope youâre enjoying your weekend wherever you are!
Motor Yacht OLOH Having A Great Run From Vero Beach To Titusville
Update from the bridge en route from Vero Beach to Titusville Marina! As straight-forward a run as there is, a beautiful, calm day on the water and OLOH is running like a dream!
Special shout out to the southbound crew of the classic Grand Banks, M/V Element out of Hilton Head, who hailed us to say hello right by Cocoa Village. So nice to meet you out here!
Update from the bridge: apparently all of the well wishes, encouragement, and good vibes worked - OLOH is underway! With BIG thanks to Hinckley Yacht Services Stuart and Florida Detroit Diesel Allison (John rocks!)
Motor Yacht OLOH Loses An Engine!
It was a perfect plan and a perfect day.
Among the things weâve learned in our years of boating up and down the east coast is that we have no interest in traveling on the Intracoastal Waterway in south Florida on weekends. Which is why we were thrilled that the forecast was cooperating so beautifully, allowing us to travel offshore between Palm Beach and Fort Pierce, avoiding what can be a particularly chaotic stretch on a sunny Saturday or Sunday.
It was 8:36am. We were just outside of Jupiter inlet, about 15.5 nautical miles into our day with around 50 to go to our destination for the evening. There was barely a ripple in the water and OLOH was running perfectly. We were chatting away and enjoying our morning coffee when suddenly, without alarms or warning of any kind, something changed radically. A glance to the helm showed us that the starboard engine had shut down.
Weâll have more details to come on what happened next including the how and why of our tow along with other updates. We hope to get a proper diagnosis today, but all signs point to an issue with the starboard engineâs electronic control module. We are bullish on regular and preventative maintenance but this simply looks like one of those things that was beyond our control. We feel fortunate that the conditions were what they were and how everything worked out to get us safely tied at an outstanding facility that we know well. Frustrating as it all is, we always do our best to keep things keenly in perspective. It's boating.
And we are so appreciative of all of the concern and kind comments - thank you.
Update from the bridge - Yet another spectacular day to be underway and offshore on the Atlantic between Miami and one of our favorite homes away from home, Safe Harbor Old Port Cove in North Palm Beach as we make our way up Floridaâs east coast. These are indeed the days we say, âhow lucky are we?â
OLOH is safely on the hook after day 1 as we make our way up the east coast of Florida. A great day on the water from Marathon to Miami⊠with a well-fed crew. But youâll have to check out our Instagram to see what came out of the galley for lunch underway (hint⊠it wasnât Spam - and it was spectacular).
The adventures continue! OLOH is underway as we begin to make our way out Keys and up the east coast of Florida. First stop, No Name Harbor in Miami. We are hoping for redemption from our miserable anchoring experience last time we passed through and stayed at Marine Stadium. Weâve got about 86 nautical miles to travel today in very good conditionsđ.
Thanks for joining in on the fun!
The checklists have been checked. OLOH has been prepped. We are ready for what's next...
A Mudslide In The Keys?!
When in the Florida Keys, do as in, uh, Block Island?!
Yay! Jasper finally gets in his Whaler!
OK. We'll say it. Sunday. Funday. đ
Continuing to take advantage of those rare, great days in the Keys this winter... If the sun is warm and the conditions are calm enough, even once in a great while, where is Jasper going to be?
The OLOH Crew Cruising In The Florida Keys On The Three B's
Weâre calling it the winter of âcatch-as-catch-canâ as far as our ability to enjoy time out on the water is concerned.
This is our sixth year wintering aboard OLOH in the Florida Keys. Weâve had stretches of cool weather and windy weather in past seasons but those have always been more the exception. This year it has been the rule and days that are warm and calm enough to get out on the water have been few and far between. So when we get a day that even approaches warm and calm enough, we seize it. And yes, we keep it keenly in perspective that even at its worst, weather in the Keys is often much better than much of the country.
Our latest opportunity had us enjoying OPD (Other Peopleâs Diesel) as we joined The Three Bâs crew for an awesome day on the hook with a wonderful lunch and great company. And some boating!
