Travel, always an adventure, even before leaving ;) A bit of a write up about visa troubles with some good-to-know stuff thrown in there :)

Visa trouble Posted on May 4, 2016 by TravelTom When travelling you will be met with countries for which you need to have a visa to be able to enter the country. Life has been crazy in the past 1,5 year. Those who know me know that I moved to a different country. Starting a whole new life takes time and it is the reason why it's been quiet over here. But I'm planning on picking things up again.

You can find a short read on it on the blog over here:

Is it safe to travel to Paris? Posted on January 19, 2015 by TravelTom Personally I would say yes. But the truth is that this is a very hard question to answer. What kind of safety? Wikipedia defines safety as: “Safety is the state of being “safe” (from French sauf), the condition of being protected…

Unfortunately I already had to update the last post I made about commercial airline incidents over the past 14 years. Details of the crashed AH5017 flight have been added to reflect the correct numbers. Sadly this only makes 2014 stand out even more, in a bad way.

Doing drugs at home is a bad idea. Doing drugs abroad is a worse idea. Transporting it ... worst.

Pham Trung Dung experienced that the hard way, as he got sentenced to death for trying to move he**in from Vietnam to Australia.

South East Asian countries have very strict drug laws. You don't want to mess with them!

What is a good reason to travel?

For some the answer is "partying". Well, good news if you head over to Belgium, because there are festivals from April all the way up to November! Including, Werchter, Pukkelpop, Tomorrowland, Graspop and I Love Techno among many others!

For a list, check this post: http://traveltom.org/?p=196

Missing a festival in the list? Leave a comment and I'll add it!

Burmese Bamba, "una poca de gracia" in Myanmar!

It's been a while since I posted a video from the festival in Lonton in Myanmar. So here's a new one, with a Western twist!

I'm sure Ritchie Valens never imagined his music would travel half way around the world. I sure didn't expect to find his music there. But I'm glad I did!

Countries without borders ... according to Google.

Some countries do not get the typical red border if you look them up in Google Maps. For example: Laos gets a red border, but Vietnam does not.

Myanmar (Burma)

On March the 25th I posted about "responsible tourism" and how I thought it was a good decision by the Myanmar government to ban further construction of hotels in Bagan in order to protect the temples.
.. well, looks like rules are meant to be broken.

The Hilton group has shown interest in Myanmar and is teaming up with a powerful Myanmar conglomerate.

A bit more info (and links) in the article if you follow the link. But it comes down to the fact that Hilton will be constructing a hotel in Bagan.

Passports! I'm convinced every traveller has had one (or more) times when they couldn't find their passports right away and started freaking out after a few minutes.

So, yeah, it's always a good idea to know where your passport is.

That's one thing. Not letting your 4 year old kid play with your passport is also a good thing as it turns out. This dad learned the hard way unfortunately, by not being able to leave the country he travelled to!
