Alwan. Nouri has a BSc. in Marine Science (1980).

Company background

Mutual Marine Services Al Mushtaraka Ltd., Iraq (Al Mushtaraka) was established in 2007 by Capt Nouri
Alwan, an exMaster Mariner and Mr. Mark Galloway, an Oxford lawyer and an expert in maritime
affairs and maritime law in Middle Eastern Countries. We are emerging as one of the leading shipping
agents and also have the advantage and trust as the P&I Club Correspondents of many

leading P&I Clubs
at all the Iraqi ports. Although Mushtaraka is part of a larger group of companies, our aim is to provide an independent, high
quality service based on local expertise and local knowledge. Iraq’s social and business culture has been
so strongly affected by the years of totalitarian state control, sanctions, and tribal, ethnic, and religious
animosities that most international companies find it frustrating to start business in Iraq. Corruption and
serious security problems have made business development doubly difficult. Few foreigners are brave
enough to come into Iraq to manage new business as is normally possible elsewhere. Other solutions have to be found through local means. The aim of Al Mushtaraka is to find those locally
based solutions and build the capabilities of local staff as quickly as is possible. Directors
Captain Nouri Alwan is Managing Director of al Mushtaraka Iraq and a native of Basrah. He gained his Master’s certificate with Iraqi Oil Tanker Co sailing on VLCCs and
product carriers. His previous career includes marine survey, cargo survey in Jordan with Kawar
shipping, and inspection & survey in Australia, UAE, and Iraq for Intertek Testing Services. He is a
member of the Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors. He is fluent in English and Arabic. Capt Nouri
has very good contacts and enjoying cordial working relation with the Ministries, local bodies, and in
particular the maritime authority’s at all Iraqi ports. With his good rapport with the Port Management,
we can manage to resolve many serious and complicated issues without much ado and at a lesser cost. Previous shipping management experience with the Iraqi Oil tanker Company has also given Nouri
strong experience and excellent connections within Iraq’s oil sector. Mark Galloway is a partner and director of al Mushtaraka Iraq and has overall responsibility for policy
making and management of the organisation. Mark has worked in the field of P&I since leaving Oxford
University in 1978 and has considerable experience of Iraq, starting from the years prior to the IranIraq
war. Throughout the 1980s, Mark was a frequent visitor to Iraq and led the settlement negotiations with
the state insurer and state importing organisations for the thousands of claims left unresolved from
before September 1980. From 19942003, Mark was heavily involved in the monitoring of “Oil for Food”
shipments and dealt with many of the problems caused by cargo rejection and arguments in respect of
specification. Group companies and affiliates and related business:
Al Mushtaraka is part of an independent family group of companies which include:
OCSCL Saudi Arabia, long standing agents for COSCO and joint venture partner with COSCO in
COSBICO Saudi Arabia, operating at all Saudi Arabian Ports.
Somarain Oriental, Sudan agents of both COSCO and NYK, operating in Port Sudan and
Khartoum.
Orient Shipping, ship agents in Egypt
Sohar Shipping, ship agents in Oman
AlMushtaraka as P&I Club Correspondents are operating at all the ports of Saudi Arabia, Port
Sudan, and Massawa, as well as Iraq.
In addition to shipping agency business, the Group is active in marine survey and inspection. The
AMS/ABT group of companies operates in Iraq, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Sudan.
Marine Services Co. Ltd., another member of the Group, is active in tug and small craft
operation, supply and maintenance of navigation equipment, ship repair and maintenance etc. Management and key staff in Iraq
The shipping agency operations of al Mushtaraka in Iraq are managed by Engineer Wael Majeed as
Shipping and Operations Manager, whilst Capt. Taalib Alwan, the Basrah manager, is responsible for
taking care of P&I related business. Both have good experience in their related fields, excellent
connections throughout the Iraqi ports, with a strong background in shipping and cargo handling
services. Both began their shore careers in ship agency, and have worked variously in the Iraqi state
Maritime and Transport Services Corporations. Engineer Wael Majeed has a degree in marine
engineering from Basrah. Capt Taalib (exIraqi oil tanker) is a Master Mariner from Basrah Maritime
Academy. Prior to joining Al Mushtaraka, Engineer Wael had served in the Iraqi Navy. Thus he also has
excellent connections inside the ports with key personnel, including the Navy and coast guard
authorities, and at the oil terminal.

Container units form the most integral part of the entire shipping industry, trade, and transport. These shipping containers are the structures that store various kinds of products that need to be shipped from one part of the world to another. Moving containers protect contents on the long journeys they make and ensure they make it back to you in one piece.

As such, depending on the type of products to be shipped or the special services needed from them, container units may vary in dimension, structure, materials, construction etc. various types of shipping containers are being used today to meet requirements of all kinds of cargo shipping. Some of the most common types of shipping containers in use today are mentioned below.

1. Dry storage container

The most commonly used shipping containers; they come in various dimensions standardized by ISO. They are used for shipping of dry materials and come in size of 20ft, 40 ft and 10ft.

2. Flat rack container

With collapsible sides, these are like simple storage shipping containers where the sides can be folded so as to make a flat rack for shipping of wide variety of goods.

3. Open top container

With a convertible top that can be completely removed to make an open top so that materials of any height can be shipped easily.

4. Tunnel container

Container storage units provided with doors on both ends of the container, they are extremely helpful in quick loading and unloading of materials.

5. Open side storage container

These storage units are provided with doors that can change into completely open sides providing a much wider room for loading of materials.

6. Double doors container

They are kind of storage units that are provided with double doors, making a wider room for loading and unloading of materials. Construction materials include steel, iron etc in standardized sizes of 20ft and 40ft.

7. Refrigerated ISO containers

These are temperature regulated shipping containers that always have a carefully controlled low temperature. They are exclusively used for shipment of perishable substances like fruits and vegetables over long distances.

8. Insulated or thermal containers

These are the shipping storage containers that come with a regulated temperature control allowing them to maintain a higher temperature.
The choice of material is so done to allow them long life without being damaged by constant exposure to high temperature. They are most suitable for long distance transportation of products.

9. Tanks

Container storage units used mostly for transportation of liquid materials, they are used by a huge proportion of entire shipping industry. They are mostly made of strong steel or other anti corrosive materials providing them with long life and protection to the materials.

10. Cargo storage roll container

A foldable container, this is one of the specialized container units made for purpose of transporting sets or stacks of materials. They are made of thick and strong wire mesh along with rollers that allows their easy movement. Availability in a range of colored wire meshes make theseshipping container units a little more cheerful.

11. Half height containers

Another kind of shipping containers includes half height containers. Made mostly of steel, these containers are half the height of full sized containers. Used especially for good like coal, stones etc which need easy loading and unloading.

12. Car carriers

Car carriers are container storage units made especially for shipment of cars over long distances. They come with collapsible sides that help a car fit snugly inside the containers without the risk of being damaged or moving from the spot.

13. Intermediate bulk shift containers

These are specialized storage shipping containers made solely for the purpose of intermediate shipping of goods. They are designed to handle large amounts of materials and made for purpose of shipping materials to a destination where they can be further packed and sent off to final spot.

14. Drums

As the name suggests, circular shipping containers, made from a choice of materials like steel, light weight metals, fiber, hard plastic etc. they are most suitable for bulk transport of liquid materials. They are smaller in size but due to their shape, may need extra space.

15. Special purpose containers

Not the ordinary containers, these are the container units, custom made for specialized purposes. Mostly, they are used for high profile services like shipment of weapons and arson. As such, their construction and material composition depends on the special purpose they need to cater to. But in most cases, security remains the top priority.

16. Swap bodies

They are a special kind of containers used mostly in Europe. Not made according to the ISO standards, they are not standardized shipping container units but extremely useful all the same. They are provided with a strong bottom and a convertible top making them suitable for shipping of many types of products.
