There will be so much to do, so much to see, you won’t need to worry about keeping little hands busy during your world trip. Right?

WRONG.

Keeping our daughter amused during downtime was a skill I sharpened along the way. We had limited space for toys and not wanting her to turn into a screen zombie, we had to use our imagination.

Loo-roll rockets with plastic bottle tops. Free fun!

Adults can easily forget how to be playful. Add to that delayed planes, wrong turns and 38 degrees heat and thinking of a fun game to keep your kid from having a public meltdown is sometimes the last thing you have the energy for.

Here are a few tips to keep your brain sharp and your kids entertained when travelling…

– Jot down some downtime activities when you are calm, happy and have the mental energy to think.

– As soon as you arrive at a new place, scan all cupboards for random objects you can use in some way to keep your little ones occupied (paper cups, bits of string, corks…)
