TODAY’S TIDBIT – Skunk

Skunks are known to everyone by sight, smell, and reputation. There are 4 species of skunk in the United States with the Striped Skunk being found in every county in Ohio.

The striped skunk is about the size of a house cat. The hair is long and black, with a broad patch of white on its head and shoulders. Two white lines forming a “V” from the shoulder area may extend part way or all of the way to the base of the bushy tail.

This skunk only had a white patch on its head and very tip of its tail. I’ve never seen one like this before.

Although not true hibernators, skunks store quantities of body fat in the fall. When the weather gets cold they will retreat to protective dens where they might remain for several weeks or a month at a time.

We have some loose or wild dogs down here on South Wally. It sounded like at least three of them and they were heading my way really fast. And I can only imagine the comedy of watching me run across the field. I was able to video one crossing the river. He looked like a very happy little tan and white beagle. If you know anyone these might belong to please let them know. I would hate to see them meet their demise if they are someone's pets.
Thanks 🙂

UPDATE: GULLIVER HAS BEEN FOUND 😁

This guy took off on an adventure in the South Wally Road area near beam Road. Greer area. He's younger in this photo but you can see the markings. His name is Finn and he might be skittish. His owners phone number is on his collar.
Let me know if you've seen him 🙂

Wally Road Scenic Byway

Wally Road Scenic Byway is a 10.4 mile byway that runs through 3 counties (Ashland, Holmes and Knox). Long known as the camping and canoeing capital of Ohio. It follows the Mohican River and was once the railroad bed for the Walhonding Railroad.

Today Wally Road is home to 7 campgrounds, and canoe liveries with a calendar of events that includes The Great Mohican Pow Wow and The Mohican Blue Grass Festival. Nature lovers enjoy the mountain biking opportunities, Zip Lining for the adrenaline junkies (and some of us older adventurers), horseback riding and hiking.

For a map and additional information please click on the link below. This link is under construction and all business’ are not yet listed, but it gives a nice basic outline of the byway.
