Fun Fact Friday – Dung Beetle
Dung Beetles can be found almost everywhere in the world except Antarctica.
They are excellent decomposers which helps to improve soil quality.
They prefer dung from herbivores and specifically plant material that hasn’t been fully digested such as elephant, cow or rhino.
There are three types, rollers, tunnellers and dwellers.
The “rollers” as seen in this video create a ball with the dung, roll it away to be used as a food source or breed chamber.
Dung Beetles are the world’s strongest insect. A roller can pull a whopping 1,141 times its own bodyweight. That’s the same as a human dragging six full double-decker busses along a road!

Today is World Ocean Day. Did you know that our ocean feeds billions of people, covers over 70% of the planet, and provides 80% of the world’s biodiversity! Having just returned from Galapagos we were reminded of the important role our ocean plays in our world. Designated by UNESCO the Galapagos National Park have conservation efforts in place to protect our ocean and the marine habitat. In fact over 8 tonnes of plastic is removed from the beaches in Galapagos each year.
