What a fabulous day we had at Srishti in Munnar, India, a charitable trust initiative of the Tata Tea Company, dedicated for empowerment and sustainability for specially-abled young adult adults of the rural tea plantation community. Here we learned about the art of block-printing and indigo textile dyes and even had a chance to make our own scarves. Thank you for the wonderful time spent with your incredible team!

Mumbai - the largest city in India did not disappoint. We started with an exhilarating morning following the footsteps of the infamous Dabbawala, the lunchbox delivery service, which started in Mumbai in 1890. Studied by Harvard and many other organizations, it’s unimaginable that without the use of modern technology, this manually coded, eco-friendly delivery service has a success rate of 99.99997%. Six days a week 200,000 home-made lunches are picked up, throughout neighborhoods in Mumbai, by Dabbawalas on bicycles, then taken by train to the nearest sorting station, transported again by train to the final sorting station, delivered then by cart directly to the offices of the businessmen. The transactions are then reversed, delivering the empty lunchboxes back to the original homes. If lunches are not finished a “share” sticker can be placed on the lunchbox for the left over food to be given to impoverished families. This truly is a remarkable organization and our BE travellers were thrilled to experience the service firsthand, watching how the lunches are sorted, then riding the trains with the proud Dabbawalas. In the afternoon we visited Dobi Ghats, another unique system, whereby 100,000 pieces of laundry are picked up daily from homes and businesses in Mumbai, washed, mainly by hand, dried in the sun, ironed, folded, and returned 24hrs later. Again, another manual system with an almost perfect success rate. Our day continued with a visit to Ghandi’s home, India Gate and a few more sites and concluded with a sunset and welcome dinner. We’re all looking forward to the journey ahead.

Christmas around the world! Today, we bring you to Japan, where it’s customary to eat Kentucky Fried Chicken, yes KFC at Christmas! Since the mid-1980’s life size Colonel Sanders statues, dressed as Sandta during the holiday, welcome droves of locals and tourists alike for the tasty chicken. While there are differing reports as to how this tradition started, according to the global KFC, a traveller claimed they could not find a turkey in Japan to cook for Christmas so they resorted to buying KFC and their guests loved it. The tradition took off and has continued to this day. with KFC reporting their busiest day of the year is December 24th! If you’re in Japan this Christmas, why not join in on the tradition and order a bucket!

Our journey in Vietnam continues and we’ve now travelled through Halong Bay, the UNESCO city of Hoi An and the Imperial city of Hue. We’ve been immersed in culture, learning how to make our own lanterns, cycling through the countryside, learning organic farming techniques, large net fishing and cooking with locals. The tailor made clothing and leather goods were a hit in Hoi An and this history and architecture in Hue was incredible. We’re off to Ho Chi Minh today and then to Cambodia. Our Vietnam adventure continues in Hanoi with a visit to the Women’s Museum to learn about the important role women play in Vietnamese society, past, present and future. Learning about their daily life, their role, the heroic icons during the war and the silent sacrifices women make were all part of this wonderful museum honouring women. From there we hit the busy streets in the Old Quarter to the Ngoc Temple on the lake followed by a delicious foodie tour where we sampled the regional specialties, ate like a local and learned how to make the tasty egg coffee! Social media Our Sisters in Saigon tour is underway with a great start in Hanoi. We’re conveniently staying in the old quarter and exploring the hidden gems and sites of this capital city. Last night we experienced the cafe central Train Street area where the tracks are cleared every 30 minutes for the train to roar past. Today we visited the historical centre including the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum followed by a cyclo tour through the cultural markets in the old quarter.
