Goðafoss, the waterfall of the Gods, is located on the Iceland Diamond Circle, near the town of Húsavík in northern Iceland. In the year 1000, the Parliament of Iceland was tasked with deciding if Iceland should remain pagan or convert to Christianity. Parliament decided to have the 60-year old speaker of the Parliament Thorgeir Thorkelsson choose the path for the nation. Thorgeir spent 24 hours in his tent contemplating, and emerged the next day announcing that Iceland would convert to Christianity, but people would be free to pray their old gods in secret. Thorgeir then returned to his home near Húsavík, where he ceremoniously disposed of his Norse pagan statues into the falls.
