The other day I saw a tree on fire after the big thunderstorm in Sun Peaks... I called the BC wildfire number I found on Google, but I think this app would've been more productive. You upload a pic or pics and it gives the crew a better chance of finding and assessing the situation.

We are thrilled some people are adding photos to the new “Report a Wildfire” feature on the BC Wildfire Service Mobile App! It gives our operational team members clear information of what you are seeing, and helps them make timely response decisions.

When we receive a report with a photo, it is infinitely better than one without. It allows for an almost immediate behaviour assessment and in many cases narrows the location down to a very small area compared to verbal or text reports which can leave us with many kilometres to search. Photos submitted through Report of Fire are accessible to BC Wildfire Service response staff and provide them with a sense of what is happening on the ground before crews arrive on site.

Our biggest asset for detecting new wildfires in B.C. is you! Currently, we estimate less than five per cent of Report of Fire entries have photos.

To use this feature, make sure you have the latest version of the app downloaded to your mobile device (version 1.6.0). The Report a Fire function is not available unless you are connected to WiFi or a data network. 🔥👉📱 A video tutorial in the “Help” section explains how to report a fire in the app.

Plans in the works to Recover Sunken Boat

By Jo Anne Malpass

The owner of the 99-year-old wooden boat that sunk in McKay Bay, Lee Creek a few days ago is optimistic that it will soon be pulled ashore, repaired and refloated.

Paul White said the boat has been moored on a buoy there for the past 10 years or so. Knowing that in the wintertime, there is always the risk of the boat getting damaged by ice and possibly sinking, he always takes the fluids out of it before winter, so there is no excess fuel or engine oil in it. He has been in contact with the Canadian Coast Guard and demonstrated that the boat was prepared in case this should happen.

Because he did this, the air in all the empty and sealed fuel and water tanks, has helped to keep the boat from sinking entirely so it is still afloat. With the warmer weather and now that the ice is away from the proximity of the boat, over the next few days they are going to pull it over to the beach. Once it is pumped out, theoretically it will float again, he said. Repairs to re-caulk the seams or whatever needs to be done, can then be accomplished from the shore.

The Mandalay B. was built in Vancouver and registered in 1923. It was built in the little Hoffar Brothers shipyard, which was later sold to Bowing at the time of the big stock market crash in 1929.
Paul bought the boat in 1993 and spent 10 years renewing and refitting it and then used it extensively on the coast. When his family got established on the North Shuswap, he moved the boat up here and has taken it out with his family and with groups of friends.

Asked what he thinks happened to sink the boat, he explained “there is a phenomenon that happens with wooden boats. When the wind is extremely cold, it blows the little waves up the side of the boat and they freeze onto the side of the boat. That ice gets into the seams between the planks and freezes quickly in those little seams and pushes out the caulking that is keeping the boat watertight. I think that is what happened.”

He had been out a week or so before to check the boat and it was all good. But once the ice was solid around it, it sunk within three days.

He wants people in the community to know how much he appreciates their understanding, support and encouragement. Many have volunteered to help and offered their equipment. A special shout out to Cliff Garcia at Adams River Rafting for the offer of inflatable tubes in case they are needed in the recovery efforts.

Just spent 2 hours waiting on Hwy 1 heading east from Kamloops before getting to the hill in Chase and having to turn around. Someone said it could be closed for up to 7 hrs and that was at 4pm. This was the route I took to divert. Many other drivers (including some big rigs) were taking it too. At the time there were no signs until you got close to the accident scene.
