Mental health affects one in four people at some point in their lives, according to an article by CIPD.

As well as having a framework to support people if they experience poor mental health, it’s essential to promote good mental health throughout the workforce. Investing in employee well-being is the right thing to do, and it also enhances employee engagement and productivity, which in turn supports business growth.

Developing your emotional literacy is vital to supporting employees mental health, says Samaritans CEO Ruth Sutherland.

20/03/2019

88% of employees believe a company’s mental health strategies are important when choosing a role, a survey shows.

In contrast, no employers believed professionals would consider mental wellbeing support strategies extremely important.

The research also revealed that employers (99%) and professionals (97%) are widely in agreement that businesses have a responsibility to support the mental health of their staff. However, just 51% currently have a policy in place to support their staff.

If, as an employer, you'd like to understand more about how to sensitively manage work-related mental health, please click here for details on our seminar taking place on 24th April at 8am in Southampton: http://ow.ly/8LOW50nBiHR

When you take on any staff whether temporary or permanent, full- or part-time, it’s a good idea to have some form of written agreement in place that lays out everyone’s role, rights and responsibilities - otherwise known as an employment contract. But which terms are legally binding?

Company culture is a tricky one isn't it? And sometimes you just need to talk a challenge through with a professional. Someone who can point you in the right direction. Sound familiar? Scroll on up to the pinned post and you could do just that (for free)!

Company culture is not a buzzword. A vibrant culture can make a huge difference in how well your organisation performs and grows. It also means that company cultures that are lacking or even starting to turn toxic, can prompt employees to become indifferent about the work they are doing and damage trust in leadership.

Yes, this is a long article. But, yes, we promise it's worth a read. It's one we keep on referring back to. Read on...

You don't know what you don't know. Right?

Life is hectic. Time is precious. You're a busy entrepreneur focusing all your energy, time and passion on running your business. And you're juggling a family/social life/exercise/friends/walking the dog/planning a much needed holiday... and somewhere in all of this busy-ness you need to sleep!

To top it off, at the back of your mind, you wonder if you have your Human Resources ducks in a row. Because you don't know what you don't know, right?

At times (perhaps at 2am?!) questions arise like - how often should I review my employment contracts? My team is great, how can I encourage them to stay long-term? I need help with recruitment, but how to find the best candidates?

Okay, maybe they're not quite as formulated as that. But have we given you food for HR thought? We get it. We know.

With over 20 years of human resources experience, we can work together with you. We offer value, practical advice and an approachable attitude. Get in touch for an informal and friendly chat to talk about everything you don't know about human resources. We'd love to help you work it out.

Happy Employee Appreciation Day!

Appreciation from an employer is powerful. It’s an instant tonic; a pat on the back that says: “We’ve noticed what you have done and we like it. You’re valued around here.” Go on, say THANK YOU, and give someone that warm glow today.

Why is appreciation sometimes so underused by employers? Check out our article to find out. http://ow.ly/EuU350mkaPG

Is it time to review your employment contracts?

One of the best ways to reduce the risk of a dispute arising is by having up-to-date, signed and accurate employment contracts in place. Reviewing contracts regularly can help to mitigate against problems further down the line.

COMPETITION: Simply like and comment on this post for the chance to win 30% off an employment contract review with one of our senior HR specialists.

Here are 5 reasons to review your contracts:

1. The law changes: Employment law is constantly evolving and by reusing old contracts employers may inadvertently fail to meet minimum employment standards.

2. To tailor to the needs of the business, not the statutory minimum: Where an employment contract is silent on an area covered by employment legislation and there is a dispute, tribunals will revert to the statutory position. This may not always lead to the most suitable outcome for a business.

3. The businesses landscape changes: Increased competition in an industry or issues with confidentiality breaches can necessitate restrictive covenants in contracts of employment (such as non-compete agreements and confidentiality clauses).

4. Ensure consistency: Over time it is not uncommon for ad hoc changes to be made to a contract template which in isolation may seem of little consequence. Whilst it may be entirely appropriate for certain terms to be role specific, it is advisable that all general terms are uniform throughout your business in order to make the day to day task of managing your employees easier and to help protect against claims of unfairness or discrimination.

5. To resolve a specific issue: Changing contractual terms is not straightforward and should not be done without consultation and the agreement of both parties. It is, however, possible and a review of your contract of employment can be a good place to start.

Some statistics have the raw power to pull you up short and make you think twice.

This happened to us recently when we were reading a survey on mental health in the UK. The Mental Health at Work Report is a three-year project by the Prince of Wales’s Business in the Community charity. One of its most eye-catching findings was that 61% of employees “have experienced mental health issues due to work, or where work was a related factor.” The 2017 edition found that almost a third of the workforce had been formally diagnosed with a mental health issue.

These are alarmingly high figures.

Just about everyone knows that poor mental health is a growing societal issue. But the sheer scale of the problem is only now becoming clear.

The pressing question for employers is how we can sensitively and effectively address it.

Take a read of this piece we’ve written to explain how to do just that. We’re passionate about this. Get in touch if you want to chat about how to deal with the effects of the mental health epidemic on your business.

Our Story

We work in partnership with business owners who take an ethical approach to the way they run their business and are committed to developing their business through their people.

Running a business can be challenging, and most of us relish that challenge. But few business owners really relish the challenges of people management, HR and employment law. That’s when problems can arise and employer–employee relationships can break down.

The truth is, if you have the right HR partner it’s often a simple case of following sound practices that keep your business out of hot water. But this can be time consuming, taking your time and attention away from business-critical tasks. And if you opt for in-house support, HR is an additional fixed overhead cost.

Outsourcing your HR needs to someone who really knows your business is the ideal solution.
