About Destination Kivu

The Destination Kivu stretches from the vibrant beach town Rubavu (156km from Kigali) in the North, over the picturesque lakeside town Karongi (110km from Kigali), along the majestic mountain rainforest Nyungwe with its diverse wildlife, up to the former fishing village Rusizi (240km from Kigali).

Rubavu is one of the busiest cities in Rwanda and has a beautiful scenery view of Lake Kivu on one side and Volcanoes on the other. It has plenty of biking and hiking trails filled with adventurous experiences and is also known for its agro-tourism experiences with many tea and coffee plantations. Karongi is one of the most relaxing and romantic places in Rwanda, and is an ideal place to enjoy lakeside recreation. Rusizi lies at the southern end of Lake Kivu, where the waters stream into the Rusizi River which forms the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The three towns are interconnected by a curvy road winding its way through the breathtaking landscape passing green banana fields and tea plantations, charming little rural villages and the endless wideness of Lake Kivu. Those who like it more adventurous can cover the distance on the Congo-Nile-Trail, a hiking and biking route along the shores of the Lake. The entire trek is 227 km long and can be completed within 10 days of hiking or 5 days of biking. Additionally, there are boat services offered between Rusizi, Karongi and Rubavu. Regardless of how you travel, the area has a lot to offer: Visitors can stopover at one of the many tea and coffee plantations, track through the rain forests on the search of primates and rare bird species, enjoy waterbased activities such as kayaking and visit local community projects to experience Rwandan history and culture.
