Traveling Out Loud This is a travel blog that seeks to unfold the culture of travel and the treasures of the world through writing, photos, and travel guides.

I provide travel planning services, and sell travel photography. I live my life in pursuit of adventure and to make every moment matter. My first trip abroad was to France with my french teacher and a couple classmates at age 16. My parents made a lot of concessions to get me there. It was that trip that travel captured my heart and that’s what I wanted to do in life, travel and adventure. Unfortu

nately though, I didn’t know how to accomplish that. So not knowing how to do it and believing that life had to be lived a certain way, I decided to get my degree first, and then my master’s degree, and then I got a job…and that window to travel is getting harder to climb through. I thought by having a degree, I would have the freedom and security to travel, and I’d be better able to support my expensive habit. I ended up with a lot of college debt, and graduating in the midst of a deep recession with no job. Add in a couple of other stupid mistakes, and things were looking bleak. After applying and applying and applying, I finally landed a job that is allowing me to pay off my debt, create a savings, and satiate my need to travel, even if it’s only in small doses. So here is the “in the meantime” stuff before the big trip.

Blog post coming soon, but in the meantime, I wanted to recommend one of the podcasts I have recently been listening to. It's an adaptation of National Geographic's tv show, Locked Up Abroad. It tells real life stories of travel nightmares. None of us want travel nightmares, so maybe this podcast will help us learn how to avoid them, or at least be more prepared if one becomes a reality for us.

Jim Clemente hosts this audio adaptation of the hit National Geographic TV series detailing the gruesome stories of Americans locked up abroad.

Hope this helps the language gap when traveling to Mexico.

Hope this helps the language gap when traveling to Mexico.

Understanding this word takes not a fluency in the language but rather a fluency in Mexican culture.

New Blog Post: Antelope Canyon: The Shots Seen Round the World

Some insight and looks into one of the most photographed and visited places in the world!

If you have been to a business office, seen a motivational poster, or surfed the internet you have seen a photograph of Antelope Canyon. You may not even know you have seen a photo from there or recall when you have, but when you see one, you instantly know you have seen it before. It’s usually a my...

New Blog Entry: Snakes on the Brain

A terrifying glimpse at my neuroses regarding snakes. Getting a little personal again. Warning, lots of photos of snakes and discussions about snakes.

Shaking and trembling, I could feel the muscles of the snake contract as it slithered across my shoulders. I could feel the cool scales slide through my hands. I could sense its head close to mine, its piercing eyes looking at me, its tongue reading my scent. I could feel its tail wrapping tightly a...

New Blog Entry: Footsteps of an Introvert

I get a little personal with this one and discuss life as an introvert.

I’m an introvert trying to live in an extroverted world. I’m an introvert that sometimes ends up in the spotlight performing improv and sketch comedy, or dancing in swing dance competitions. I’m an introvert who has traveled to many places throughout the world and made many friends. I’m an introvert...

New Blog Entry: A Toast to Skydiving

“Cheers,” a group of us shouted beaming with sloppy grins as we clinked our shot glasses of tequila together, “to skydiving!” And that’s the reason I found myself jumping out of a small rickety plane two miles from the ground one week later.

I finally finished Part 5 of the "Traveling Off the X" series! It's full of gear recommendations you may find useful!

Traveling to a foreign country, whether with a tour, a local, a friend, a group, or by yourself, introduces some measure of danger or risk to your safety. While all danger can’t be completely avoided, it can be mitigated to some degree by learning ways to avoid it and by being prepared for it.

A gift of travel is the chance to see how different cultures invite love into their lives. Take a second and see how the world around you celebrates love. We are all human and we all love, let that be what connects us. Happy Valentine's Day!

New Blog Entry: Suffocating in Sulfur

Around 4:45 am, after almost three hours of hiking, I found myself at the bottom of the caldera inside the heart of the Kawah Ijen volcano complex on the island of Java in Indonesia. It was still dark, so I couldn’t see the entirety of the still active volcano, Ijen, or the turquoise-colored hydrochloric acid lake it housed yet. I could see the roaring blue fire spewing from cracks in the volcanic wall. Those flames drew my camera and I to them like a siren draws a boat to the rocky shores, because right when I got to them, a plume of sulfur gas engulfed me and filled my lungs, successfully starting to suffocate me....

New Blog Entry: Camel Riding in a Sandstorm

"We were in the thick of the Sahara desert dunes. It had been an hour and a half since our caravan started out, and the sunlight was fading into the sand lined horizon. My camel continued on towards our desert campsite for the night, following the line of camels being led by a Bedouin. The wind started picking up, and with a brief glance to my left, I saw a sky that was darkened brown with dust with any remaining blue being slowly consumed by it – it was a sandstorm, and it was heading directly for us."

New Blog Post: Extreme Culture Shock in a Hammam

I'm a little hesitant to post this one as I don't want it to be taken in a negative way. It is just an honest account of my experience in a local hammam in Morocco. Also, I know writing doesn't have ratings, but I feel like this should have like a PG-13 rating.

"I stood silent with three of my friends at the bottom of the plain unassuming steps that led up to the local hammam in Fez. With my wet hair wrapped in a pink and orange scarf and my skin shiny and bright pink, I stood contemplating and trying to grasp what just happened to me and how I felt about it. The bustling city continued on, unaware that I was in slight shock. One thing I knew to be true, I was just vigorously scrubbed by a partially naked woman to some kind of clean."

New Blog Entry: Goat Decorated Trees
"On one of my long days driving through Morocco, I was passing through Argan Tree Country, where there are just miles upon miles of Argan trees. I was passively looking out the window, listening to music, and writing in my travel journal, when all of the sudden, there was a tree full of goats."

New Travel Blog Entry: "Sleeping Next to Lions"
Six of us hopped into a 4×4 pop-up top safari vehicle with our local guide, Claus. For the next three days we would explore the Serengeti National Park, and in those days, the only thing separating us from death or being mauled, would be that safari vehicle, some occasional armed guards, and…a tent.
