Amazon has acquired a team of employees from Facebook focused on delivering internet connectivity from low Earth orbit satellites, The Information reports. Amazon paid Facebook an undisclosed sum as part of the acquisition, which saw more than a dozen Los Angeles-based employees switch companies in April to work on Project Kuiper. A Facebook spokesperson confirmed the news to The Information.

Amazon is massive. So massive, in fact, that it is “on pace to become the nation’s largest private employer within a year or two,” observes a new investigation from the New York Times. But what does that mean for the people it hires?

On Friday, several new bills were introduced in the House of Representatives that directly target the largest technology companies. One of those bills, the Ending Platform Monopolies Act, would require Amazon to break itself into two businesses so that it can no longer offer other companies’ products while simultaneously competing against those sellers with its own private label goods. On the surface, this is great news for third-party sellers. Not having to compete against Amazon’s private label sellers will be a boon to those sellers on Amazon’s platform.

The day of reckoning for third-party sellers on Amazon is not here yet, but it draws closer every day.

Yet the importance of AWS to the company, consumers and the global internet economy is difficult to overstate. Internally, the division is Amazon’s cash cow, making up 59% of the company’s $22.9 billion profit before interest and taxes in 2020, despite accounting for just 12% of Amazon’s revenue. AWS infrastructure also supports Amazon logistics, helping route more than 2.5 billion packages every year to the right address (most of the time), not to mention nearly all of Amazon’s other operations.

"Amazon is withholding ebook and audiobook versions of works it publishes through its in-house publishing arms from US libraries, according to a new report from The Washington Post. In fact, Amazon is the only major publisher that’s doing this, the report states. It’s doing so because the company thinks the terms involved with selling digital versions of books to libraries, which in turn make them available to local residents for free through ebook lending platforms like Libby, are unfavorable."

Twitch took down two ads, which were first reported by pro-labor media outlet More Perfect Union, from its platform: One showed an Amazon worker saying that unions “take your money,” while the other had featured a worker saying she has “everything we need” from Amazon.

In a statement, a Twitch spokesperson told Forbes the ads violated the company’s policies against political advertising, saying they “should never have been allowed to run on our service.” https://www.forbes.com/sites/rachelsandler/2021/02/25/amazon-owned-twitch-pulls-its-parent-companys-anti-union-ads/?sh=7f55daa2363b
