Cruiser life is…boat work in beautiful places?
During our time in Turks and Caicos our list of boat projects was growing longer and longer but with so many group trips planned, we had very little time or energy to get anything else done. Now that we have a few days to prepare for our passage through Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico on our way to our next destination of St Martin, we’re trying to tick a few of the most critical projects off the list.
The biggest challenge we faced while in T&C was the burnout of our windlass motor (this raises and lowers the anchor). The anchor by itself is 88lbs and that’s before you account for the weight of the chain at 2.5lbs per foot! To raise it, we rigged up a manual system using an old halyard attached to a hook, that went through a block at the mast foot and then back to our electric winch at the helm. We were able to raise the anchor and chain 10-15ft at a time (we typically had between 100-140ft out), securing the chain in place with a dyneema safety strap, lowering the raised chain into the anchor locker by hand, and then moving the hook back down the chain so we could begin the process again.
This worked (slowly and painfully) for almost three weeks before on a particular blustery day the old halyard we were using snapped twice under load while trying to keep the boat stationary. Thankfully, we shipped a new windlass motor to our final group who brought the part with them and now we're gloriously able to raise and lower the anchor again with a remote control. Small luxuries.
👋 Goodbye Bahamas ⛵ Hello Turks and Caicos!
Our Bahamian flag has been well loved and well worn like a good book, but it's time to retire this old gal.
We've just picked up anchor after our final night on the remote Bahamian island of Mayaguana. Today we finish our passage with a 7-hour sail to Providenciales, the main island of Turks and Caicos for two months of fun and three charters with new and old friends. 🇹🇨

DONE! 👏 We wrapped an amazing week on Neverland after the splash. It's always so much fun with the yacht squad! Lots of photos to come.
This weekend the crew had her shining bright at the broker show and now Neverland is ready for a new season of making memories.
