What a difference a century makes!

These are two images of the Giant’s Grave taken approximately 100 years apart. The older image was taken by William Alfred Green, a county Down native, photographer and member of the Belfast Naturalists Field Club. Today thousands of Green’s images survive and capture Ireland on the cusp of great change and modernity. When he visited Lough Gur is not precisely known, but he took the vast bulk of his photographs between 1905 and the early 1920s.
It is shocking to see how much vista has changed in 100 years. Today, the Giant’s Grave is shadowed by numerous towering ash trees, which is in stark contrast to the open view of the lake Green would have had when he visited all those years ago.
Several decades after Green’s visit the Giant’s Grave would be excavated by Seán P. Ó Ríordáin.

W.A.Green’s photograph reproduced with the kind permission of National Museums NI.

Megalithic Rock Art is what we call the shapes, designs, and patterns, carved into rocks by people in the past. This is more often from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. These designs remain obscure and difficult to interpret but many believe that the circular and spiral motifs (such as was found at Grange Stone Circle) could represent the sun. The most famous site in Ireland for such art is Brú na Bóinne, and includes the tombs of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. The designs were likely carved into the stone using a harder rock. The discovery at Grange is the first such example in Munster and thus, is of great importance. There is an implication in this find that the carved stone, at least, was in place when the embankment was constructed approx. 5,000 years before the present.

Today we spotted something quite magical here at the lake right beside the wishing chair as you can see a fairy ring is starting to form 🧚

‘In an out amongst the haycocks one goes – it is surely the fairies again who plant the fungi in such special plentifulness around the circular mounds of hay - following the tracks of the dark – green mushroom – rings in the lighter green of the grass…’
The Irish Independent, Thursday 17th October 1907, p. 4.
‘Long ago there used be “fairy circles” in several fields throughout the country, and at twelve o’clock on moonlight nights the fairies were often seen dancing and singing in those circles. In Pat Lynche’s meadown in Carrickeeshil there used be one of those circles and it was about forty feet in circumference, and it was marked from the rest of the field by a bordering of bright green grass, about two or three inches higher than the other grass, and people say that this grass would grow up in one night. In a farm belonging to Philip Conolly Aughadreena there are three “fairy circles” still to be seen.’ Account from Lurgananure, Co. Cavan

Folk Music DUO - Fly Yeti Fly

📅 Thursday 12th September 2024
⏰8pm
🎟€15.00 incl booking fee

Bookings: https://eventlist.store/friarsgatetheatre/fgt

With their own unique flavour of delicate-but-distinctive folk, Fly Yeti Fly are guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Blending sensitive vocal harmonies with intricate guitar arrangements, mandolin and harmonica, and with a warmth of spirit that radiates from the stage, the Wiltshire-based duo weave songs and stories about connection, community and the seasons, with a sound that is reminiscent of the late-’60s folk scene. Now living on their canal boat on the Kennet & Avon, their music is heavily influenced by the ebb and flow of life on the water.

“Folk music, sometimes, manages a pretty decent prayer. And it’s just a personal preference, but Lorna and Darren’s woven vocal braid, once again, conjures Wordsworth’s “heaven”. Folking.com“

Well thought out melodies and deft musicianship, this is English folk craftsmanship of the highest order.” Americana-uk.com

“Fly Yeti Fly were simply outstanding. There is a whiff of Haight Ashbury in an English Country Garden about this outfit. Great songs, soft, haunting, fragile vocals, and a warmth and purity of spirit that radiates from the stage.” Festivals For All, 2019
