Bobbie Nelson, Willie Nelson's older sister and his piano player for decades, died today. She was 91 years old. News courtesy of Turk Pipkin, who has worked with Willie and the family for years and co-wrote two books with Willie.

Navy man killed December 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor while aboard the USS Oklahoma returns to the mainland after remains identified using DNA matching. Raised in Wisconsin, most of his family is now in Texas. Buried Monday, January 24, 2022 at Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery. Full military honors.

Another 20+ year overnight success. Dell Foundation gives $36.6 million to Mobile Loaves & Fishes for its Community First Village program. Mobile was founded in 1998 when Alan Graham and a few other parishioners at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Austin started delivering meals to street people out of the back of a van. Happy First Automobile Road Trip in Texas Day October 5. This Texas Historical Commission story details the first car repair during a road trip in Texas. If memory is correct, this was also the first car trip with a ticket, and speculation that the destination was for first car road trip to visit a lady friend.

The first documented automobile road trip in Texas took place 121 years ago.

On October 5, 1899, Edward Howland Robinson Green, president of the Texas-Midland Railroad, embarked on a trip from Terrell to Dallas in his newly acquired “St. Louis” gas-powered horseless carriage, accompanied by the car’s designer, George P. Dorris.

The trip covering about 35 miles took five-and-a-half hours along roads meant for horse-drawn vehicles. A historical marker commemorating the historic journey was placed in 1990 at Bell Park in Forney, near where a local blacksmith made needed repairs for the trip to be completed.

This pioneering adventure paved the way for the transforming impact of automobile culture on the state.
