The beautiful lizard, 10" long. It's right back leg looked injured. We saw it in Walnut Creek on an errant half mile jag down the wrong, or old, CDT path.

A 40-mile backpack on the Continental Divide Trail, just north of Silver City. Clear skies, great stargazing. Quite dry, no water except for a trickle at Bear Creek. We planned ahead with a water cache at the halfway point, near the Arrastre site.

2 wildfires between Canjilon and Ghost Ranch NM, lightning caused, 4 acres total, no closures yet. Crews mobilized.

Indios Fire is being carefully managed, with 440 crew people, % completion of objectives as the goal (not % containment), and seeking environmental benefits of natural fire. 4 miles of CDT has burned and this section is closed from highway 96 to the Chama River at USFS-151.

New Wildfire Start in Coyote Ranger District
Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) fire managers were notified of a new wildfire start on Sunday, May 19, around noon in the Coyote Ranger District, located about 7 miles north of the village of Coyote, N.M within the Chama River Canyon Wilderness. The fire is around 150-200 acres with no risks to people and property.
Fire managers are evaluating a variety of management strategies for the Indios Wildfire, which can range from full suppression to managing the fire to restore its natural role in the ecosystem while meeting resource objectives on the landscape. Wildfire management decisions are informed by several factors including firefighter safety, terrain, weather forecasts, past prescribed fire units and vegetation management projects in area, and threats to public safety and property.

Today in the very northwest corner of Bandelier, we viewed the solar eclipse, in gorgeous weather. It was a bonus for this London visitor on our hike up the Cerro Grande Trail. On top of that, the brilliant Fall colors. Later, the Frijoles Canyon overlook. As you can see, we met others on the trail and shared the joy of Fall, eclipse, and our beautiful National Parks.

A delightful 5-mile hike today in the Sandia Mountain Wilderness. Caves, a spring, and Travertine Falls were found soon after our start. Then enjoyed cool shade under the aromatic Ponderosa and Pinon pines, further in, on a trail loop we had to ourselves. LessTraveledTrails.com

The forest was alive for our pre-dawn hike today, Cerro Grande trail, with repeat hiker from Chicago. Observed bull elk, deer, vulture, blue birds. Bull elk bugling all around us. Incredible!

Hamilton Mesa in the Pecos Wilderness, New Mexico. 10,000+ feet. Trailhead at Irongate Campground, via Pecos, NM. Overnight backpack with my son Nicholas and four-legged companion Fred. Easy trail to get into a beautiful spot. Came out dry in our tent from a drenching rain storm, complete with thunder and lightning. Explored the Rio Valdez for the first time on our way back. Four stream crossings. Beautiful at Mora Flats, will definitely return to camp there in the future.
