press release
March 25, 2023

The American archaeological mission affiliated with New York University, working in the area of the temple of King Ramses II in Abydos, succeeded in uncovering more than 2,000 mummified rams' heads dating back to the Ptolemaic era, in addition to a huge building from the Sixth Dynasty.

This was stated by Dr. Mostafa Waziri, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, stressing the importance of this discovery, which unveils important details in the life and history of the Temple of King Ramesses II in Abydos and the surrounding area, especially in light of the archaeological and historical importance of this temple, which contributes greatly to the knowledge of the site. The temple and the life it witnessed for more than two thousand years, from the Sixth Dynasty to the Ptolemaic era.

He added that the mission also uncovered a number of mummified animals next to the heads of rams, including a group of ewes, dogs, wild goats, cows, deer and mongooses, which were found placed in one of the newly discovered storage rooms inside the northern area of the temple.

For his part, Dr. Sameh Iskandar, head of the mission, indicated that the discovery of this large number of mummified rams may have been used as votive offerings during the practice of an unprecedented worship of rams in Abydos during the Ptolemaic period, in addition to that it may indicate that King Ramesses II was revered in Abydos. He remained after his death for a thousand years.

As for the discovered huge building, which dates back to the era of the Sixth Dynasty, it is characterized by a different and unique architectural design, as it is distinguished by its huge thick walls, which are about five meters wide, pointing out that this building will contribute strongly to reconsidering and thinking about the activities and architecture of the Old Kingdom in Abydos, and about the nature of And the shape of the place and the activities that were taking place in it before Ramesses II established his temple and the accessories that surrounded it.

Professor Mohamed Abdel-Badi, head of the Central Department of Upper Egypt Antiquities at the Supreme Council of Antiquities, added that the mission also succeeded in uncovering parts of the northern wall of the wall surrounding the temple and its appurtenances, which calls for changing what has been entrenched in the minds about the shape of the temple of King Ramses II and what was described and drawn for it. It has been circulated among scholars and researchers since it was discovered more than 150 years ago, in addition to finding parts of statues, parts of papyri, remains of ancient trees, clothes and leather shoes. The mission will complete its excavation work at the site to reveal more about the history of this site and to study and document what was revealed during the current excavation season.

Presentation of the research project to discover a new corridor in the Great Pyramid by a research team from the Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University

Dr.. Elkhosht: The research team at Cairo Engineering reached the global discovery in the pyramid in cooperation with a number of foreign centers using the latest non-destructive technologies

Dr.. Al-Khasht: The passage was discovered for the first time in 2016 and its presence was confirmed in 2017 and 2018 to explore the truss area on the northern side of the pyramid of Khufu

Dr. Hani Helal, former Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and the supervisor of the research team’s project to discover a new corridor in the northern face of the Great Pyramid of Khufu, presented a presentation of the research project that was accepted for international scientific publication in January 2023 in the largest international scientific journals: Nature and NTD&E.

During the presentation, Dr. Hani Helal explained the scientific background of the research and the project, explaining that 5 complementary non-destructive technologies were used to survey the pyramids, which are infrared techniques, monitoring cosmic muon particles, georadar, acoustic measurements, simulation and 3D digital architectural analysis.

Dr. Hani Helal showed a short film from the discovery site explaining the corridor that was discovered and the efforts made by the research team.

Dr. Hani Hilal reviewed the infrared measurements and the first observation of the new corridor in the north face in October 2016, and the intensification of measurements in the descending corridor and the safe corridor. He also reviewed a summary of the results of the Nagoya University analysis, and the measurements of the Nuclear and Alternative Energy Authority, leading to the acceptance of the research project in Nature magazine.

Dr. Hani Helal indicated that this void is a horizontal corridor with an approximate length of 9.5 meters and is located directly behind the northern entrance truss, adding that the results showed the presence of an area of strong reflections in the lower half of the truss and the boundaries of the void and its relative location.

Dr. Muhammad Othman Elkhosht, President of Cairo University, stated this morning that a scientific team at the university from the Faculty of Engineering, under the supervision of Dr. An international Egyptian scientist in the pyramids, where a new corridor was discovered on the northern face of the Great Pyramid of Khufu, indicating that the scientific discovery is the result of work that took 7 continuous years and using the latest scientific findings in this field.

Dr. Elkhosht explained that the research team monitored, during its study and research project, all the details related to the global discovery with the utmost precision, from the beginning of the team’s work, through all modern technologies in cooperation with foreign partners, until completion and confirmation of the discovery, explaining that the research team discovered the void for the first time in 2016, and then it was completed. Confirmed in 2017, 2018 and 2019 using 5 different non-destructive techniques to explore the truss area at the north face of the Great Pyramid.

CAIRO, March 2 (Reuters) - Egyptian antiquities officials announced on Thursday the discovery of a hidden nine metre-long corridor behind the main entrance of the Great Pyramid of Giza that they said could lead to further findings.

The find was made under the Scan Pyramids project that since 2015 has been using modern technology including scans and endoscopes to peer inside the pyramid, the last of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing.

The unfinished corridor was likely built to relieve the weight of the pyramid on either the main entrance, seven metres below, or on another as yet undiscovered chamber or space, said Mostafa Waziri, head of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities.

The Great Pyramid was built as a monumental tomb around 2560 BC, during the reign of the Pharaoh Khufu, or Cheops.

It stands at a height of 146 metres (479 feet), the tallest structure built by humankind until the Eiffel Tower in Paris in 1889.
