🇮🇳 Our visit to Isha Foundation 🏍

First stop was at magnificent Lord Shiva statue, standing tall at 112 ft/35m this statue is constructed of steel and was completed on the 24th of February 2017.

After spending some time at the statue's location we made our way to the main building. Unfortunately photos and videos are not permitted on the compound so all we are able to share with you is the statue and the light show.

We stayed 2 nights at the foundation in the nearby apartment complex. This place was beautiful and very well organised. There's a designated area for meals, we were offered breakfast and dinner where we all sat together to partake in the hearty food that was prepared.

Both evenings we witnessed the light show that took place on the statue. Words cannot describe how emotional the light show was for me. I felt an outburst of positive energy building within me, many times I had tears flowing down my cheeks, it was intense and I'm fortunate that we got to experience this together.

I intensionally left the video long for you to be part of this experience too.
Even whilst editing this video I can feel that positive vibration.

Coimbatore, was nice to be back and perhaps you'll see us again.

Well, well. Thanks to birthdays, we can remember how many days of enjoyement we shared with our dear beloved. It is exactly 4745 days of excitement, passion, smiles, tears, happiness and uncertainty, hugs and love but especially travels, work and fun. We celebrate your born-day again, over and over, as much as it is planned for.

All the best to my "best friend" Leanna.

🇮🇳 Kochi- Guruvayur- Malampuzha 🏍

We're back on the road again, this time we have the Royal Enfield Classic. I must say this bike was very comfortable!

After leaving Kochi we took the ferry and started our journey north. Our first stop was in Guruvayu to visit Guruvayur Shri Krishna Temple. This was actually my second time visiting this holy site, unfortunately we didn't take any footage during our visit there and also the use of mobile phone are not permitted in most temples.

We also stopped at the rock garden in Malampuzha before heading to Isha Yoga Center in Coimbatore.

Welcome to Kochi 🇮🇳

We are in south India, Kerala to be exact.
It's Fabio's first time in south India and my second time. On our first day we met with Shaheed, our tuktuk driver, we spent the day with him site seeing and learning about the history of Kochi.

Fabio had a massage booked later that day at the spa, followed by the Kalari and Theyyam show and then we hit the streets for some fresh prawns.

Have you ever been to Kochi, if so, what did you enjoy the most?

The adventure continues ❤️

🇮🇳 Zemithang, Arunachal Pradesh 🏍

As we arrive to Zimethang our mission was to find a place to stay, we were directed to a homestay where we found a comfortable resting place with hospitable people.

This tiny village had everything you need. Some mini marts, a handful of restaurants, a tailor shop and even a "man cave" with a billiard table haha.

We visited Guru Padmasambhaba Monastery, located 8km at hilltop of Zimethang offered amazing views of the village and other nearby villages. The vibe there was very calm and peaceful.

We also visited another nearby monastery.

One afternoon we decided to take a ride pass our village to see what there was, we rode pass a waterfall before approaching an Army Boarder Post. They took our information and allowed up to enter the compound following the road, we were lead to another Army check point.

We spent about 3 hours there chatting with the army officials, they were so curious about us as it was the first time for majority of them meeting people outside India.
They offered us chai, chocolates, cookies and even lunch!

During our time spent with them, we were trying to get permission to enter pass their barriers to visit the Holy Tree of Grong Kukpa.
There is a Holy Tree with the walking stick of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama had struck and left it there after his escape from Tibet. The stick has now grown into a beautiful tree and holds great value.

Unfortunately, we were not able to enter (I should also mention we were 2km from China's border) nor did I know, that foreigners are presently not allowed to visit Zimethang. It all made sense because we were visited multiple times at the homestay, from different officials asking for our special permits and taking photos of our bio data page of our passports. One officer explained to us that in the past tourist were allowed to visit, but after an incident took place, they stopped it.

Only after we were told this, I had a look at our permits only to realize that Tawang was the furthest point listed, that we could visit.

Nevertheless, during our stay in Zimethang, no one made it an issue of our stay and we were greeted with smiles and lots of curious people.

I would never forget the child that saw Fabio and was in total disbelief seeing an "outsider".

This concludes our visit to Zimethang, it was a beautiful place and we really enjoyed our stay..if circumstances were different we would have loved to stay longer.

Until next time!

🇮🇳 Beyond the clouds, our journey to Tawang 🏍

Our time spent in Tawang was nothing short of incredible. Our homestay host/family was a major contributing factor for us having an enjoyable experience.

We spent 4 nights in Tawang where we visited the monastery (twice). In fact, the Tawang monastery was where the 14th Dalai Lama briefly stayed after fleeing from Tibet in 1959.

We also visited the giant Buddha statue and temple, the city center and ventured in the outskirts of Tawang to visit Chakzam bridge.

After leaving Tawang we headed to Lumla town where we visited a giant statue of Goddess Tara Devi. I would describe this as a marvelous piece of architecture and one can simply lost track of time when admiring how intricate each detail is.

The ride was breathtakingly beautiful, we passed many waterfalls on the roadside and the views of the valley was so dramatic.

Hope you guys enjoyed the ride 🏍

🇮🇳Sela pass 13,700ft / 4170m 🏍

I love how confident I sounded in the beginning, like Sela pass was going to be a piece of cake. I clearly forgot how freaking cold it is at that altitude and pair that with some light snow, the perfect concoction for a whining girl.

Fabio was super excited from start to finish, a little skeptical about icy roads but thankfully that wasn't the case. The ride was pleasant, little bumpy in some areas. The vegetation was very alien, red-yellow scrubs and the sound of the river passing alongside us, made it fairytail-like.

It's a pity I didn't capture more footage on this travel, but my hands were absolutely frozen!
We covered 139km which took us an average of 6 hours to reach our destination. As we entered Tawang, we stopped on the side of the road and started searching for homestays on Google maps.

We called couple places to find out their availability not knowing that one of the best experiences on our travel was waiting for us, right around the corner.

🇮🇳 Ziro- Sepa- Bomdila- Dirang 🏍

This was a compilation of 4 days, jumping from one place to another.

We arrived Sepa in the evening and all we did was grab dinner before going to bed. The next day on the way to Bomdila we had a stop along the way to grab a chai and some cookies and met this brother and sister duo.

Bomdila was suppose to be an overnighter but after hearing a stray puppy outside crying and assessing the situation, we ended up staying and extra night to ensure he was OK. We got the necessary medication for him and together with the neighbor, Ngawang, he took care of puppy even after we left.

Next was Dirang, we stayed at the monastery and visited the town and surrounding areas, we even went to the hot springs before calling it a night.

Up next is Tawang 🥶

🏍 Ziro Valley- Home of the Apatani Tribe🇮🇳

We had a wonderful time at Majuli and at Monjit's place and we look forward to visiting again.

Monjit gave us directions as to where we can catch the ferry and we made it just in time! As we purchased our ticket it was time to start boarding. I was taken aback when I saw the ferry, I guess in my head I was thinking about the conventional type of ferry but hey, we're in India and anything goes.

After crossing the river we started our journey into Kimin, Arunachal Pradesh.
Our first stop was at the police checkpoint, where they checked our passports and protection permits.

Our destination was Ziro Valley, what a magical place filled with rich culture and traditions. The streets were lined with vibrant flower and we were greeted by smiling faces everywhere.

As we enter the village we witnessed something truly astonishing. The Apatani Tribe women. Apatani womanhood came with the burden of carrying facial modifications that set this tribe apart from any of the other 26 main groups in the mountainous frontier state. With vertical lines tattooed across their faces and chins, and large wooden nose plugs inserted in the sides of their nostrils, Apatani women look both outlandish and fierce, unique and fearless.

Called yaping hullo in the local lingo, the wooden plugs that Apatani women use to stretch their nostrils are sourced from the forest and sterilized in the fire before being used. The dark vertical lines that cross an Apatani woman’s face — a mix of pig’s fat and soot from a fireplace — are called tippei. Commonly, one tippei crosses a woman’s face from the center of the forehead down to the tip of her nose. Five others connect the lower lip to the chin.

The popular explanation behind this peculiar tradition has an interesting origin: back in pre-modern times, the Apatani women were considered the most beautiful in the surrounding valleys. And because men from surrounding tribes, especially the Mising, had started to kidnap them, Apatani men decided to “conceal” their women’s beauty using those crude facial tattoos and large nose rings. According to the old customs, it was the elder women who mastered the art of tattooing the younger girls as soon as they had reached ten years of age.

You also saw the millet beer and an ashy like substance in a bowl, that's called Tapyo. Tapyo is a herbal salt of the Apatani. Thousands of years ago, the group’s ancestors developed an alternative to common salt, called tapyo, from herbs like sarshe (Eleusine coracana) and pepu (Phragmites karka).

Making tapyo is an elaborate process that takes days from start to finish. The plants are gathered and sun dried for a few hours before burning them to piu (ashes). The piu is collected in a conical apparatus called a sader, which has a small opening at the bottom. Water is then poured slowly in the piu, and the dark filtrate that is extracted is called the pilla.
A pan is heated on the fire and smeared with pork fat. The pilla is poured slowly on the pan until multiple layers of sediments are formed. Once the sediments solidify and become of a considerable quantity, it is all transferred from the pan. This solid substance is tapyo, which is then wrapped in the leaves and kept to cool. There is ample care taken even in the storage of tapyo: very dry air will leave it powdery; when exposed to moisture it becomes gooey. A good tapyo has a distinct flavor of bitter and sour.

During our stay we were invited to one of the villager's home to witness a healing ritual that included animal sacrifice. The gentleman you see in our video is the shaman. After performing a successful healing few weeks prior on an elderly person, he was now thanking the deities and foresee what the future of the man would have been.
Fire and smoke was filling the room with the participant and family. A brief, monotonous mantra was initiated and then shaman fell in a sort of "trans" where the words were making no sense to human understanding. That was the divine connection taking place right there in front of our very eyes. While the rest of us was skillfully plating bamboo strings to build very precise and intricate symbols and...
The shaman was keeping the rhythm of time and space with his voice.

Was then the time for an unexpected performance, at least for us, Small animals like chicks and chicken were brought inside in cages the, soon to be instruments for reading the elder man's future. In a very simple and quick motion the animals were annihilated one after the other and the interiors left on the floor, close to the fire.
After the shaman carefully analyzed the visceral parts of the animals and passed them amongst the rest of the elderly folks, the curiosity made them gather and a discussion started about the wellbeing of the patient.

I remember the smoke, the chanting, the noise of the animal hanging and then, everything went to a stop. The reading was done. The man will live many more months. Now was time to thank the gods, the sun and the moon. Put up on the wall, all inside the house, the meticulously prepared bamboo decorations. While the women were cleaning the floor from the ashes and blood, we felt like we just witnessed something very special. A ritual from the very past time, who know if not the dawn of times...

There are so much more to tell and to learn about the Apatani tribe, but we are beyond grateful that we had the opportunity to witness and be part of something extraordinary.
