How to Keep Your Kitchen Germ-Free
Cleaning up
Most of us practically live in our kitchens, but if we’re not careful bacteria can take up residence there too, says cleaning pro Laura Dellutri, author of Speed Cleaning 101. “It’s the busiest germ factory in your house.” Here, how to fight back.
Clean-kitchen-counter
Countertop
The problem: You bake a cake and spill some batter with raw egg in it, and don’t get it all wiped up. Later you make a turkey sandwich on the same spot.
Fix: Use a disinfecting wipe or spray after any food prep to kill lingering bacteria. To truly banish the yucky stuff, the cleanup-product label should say that it kills 99.9% of germs and bacteria, Dellutri says.
faucet-filter-bacteria
Faucet filter
The problem: You bump the dirty dishrag against the faucet as you’re rinsing it out, or dirty water or food splashes up on it. Bacteria can grow, and so can lime-scale residue if you have hard water.
Fix: Take out the filter and soak it in white vinegar overnight once a week.
Dish towel
The problem: You rinse your pieces of chicken and wipe your hands on the towel before continuing to cook. Salmonella alert!
Fix: During food prep with raw meat, use paper towels (not cloth) and toss them. And wash hands immediately with soap and water.
sponge-kitchen-e-coli
The problem: You use it to wipe up everything from crumbs to meat juices—and then put it back in a holder or on the edge of the sink.
Fix: Clean your sponges every few days by soaking them in a bowl of water with one teaspoon of bleach. Or zap the dirty sponge in the microwave (place it in a bowl and cover it with water) for two to three minutes. (Don’t do this if the sponge has a metal scrubber side).

Benefits of Cleaning Out Your Closet
Experts reveal how decluttering your wardrobe improves not just your space but your life.

By Leah Maxwell

If you’ve been bitten by the spring cleaning bug but don’t know where to begin, consider starting with something you use every day: your bedroom closet. Now is the perfect time to not only say goodbye to your winter fashions but also to take stock of your entire wardrobe and figure out what’s working and what needs to go. Here are seven unbeatable benefits of cleaning out your closet.

1. It’s a chance to say goodbye to negativity, and to love who you are in your clothes. For anyone saving items of clothing for a “better version” of herself, heed this advice from Marcie Lovett, a professional organizer, productivity consultant, and author of The Clutter Book: When You Can’t Let Go. “Keeping clothes that are too small in the hopes that you’ll fit into them ‘someday’ is like punishing yourself for being who you are,” she says. “If they’re several years old, it’s time to let them go. If you do lose weight, you want to wear clothes that remind you of your successes, not your struggles.”

Along that same line, she notes: “If you have clothes you don’t wear because they remind you of an unpleasant event, give them away. You don’t want to be reminded of bad memories every time you see a particular piece of clothing.” Lovett encourages people to think about it like this: “Clothes that don’t fit or flatter you are taking up space that could be used for something you enjoy wearing.” It’s that simple.

2. Your clothes will make you feel good about where you are NOW. You’ll feel better about both yourself and your clothes if you fill your closet with outfits that serve you in your current life. “Let go of clothes that don't reflect who you are now,” says Lovett. “If you’re retired, and you wear a suit twice a year, keep one and donate the rest. If you played tennis in college and haven’t swung a racket in 10 years, you probably aren't going to wear those little skirts again.”

3. You’ll free up space for new, better things. Obviously the biggest difference you’ll see when you clean out your closet is that you now have physical space for new items. Architect, author, and certified feng shui consultant Anjie Cho adds a more psychological perspective, saying: “Having a full closet tells the universe that your life is full and that you don’t need anything new in your life. If you can make some physical space, you create a vacuum for the universe to fill with something amazing and better.”

4. A streamlined closet saves time. “Every six minutes, people lose 15 seconds searching for items they can’t find,” says organizing expert and author of Behind the Clutter June Saruwatari. “You can save minutes (or even hours cumulatively) when you have an organized, clean, and streamlined closet. You’ll feel better not having to ‘fight’ your stuff to get what you need. Your closet will no longer be a battlefield. You’ll know that everything in your closet is something that honors the truth of who you are, and you will feel like a million bucks, from the inside out.”

5. Decluttering and reorganizing your closet can save you money. “Sorting and grouping your clothes saves money [because] you won’t buy another pair of black pants when you already have five,” says Lovett. “Keep a list of items you’d like to add to your wardrobe so that you buy things you really want instead of buying things impulsively.” Saruwatari adds that a closet that’s not overstuffed also protects your clothes from accidental damage that comes from “cramming, jamming, and smashing your clothes together,” which means less money spent replacing what you already have.

A clean kitchen required for food safety

For optimum food safety, we need to keep our kitchen clean. Start with the refrigerator freezer, the appliance that works non-stop to keep our perishable foods safely stored. Then tackle kitchen cabinets and pantries, where shelf stable foods are stored. Always wash hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds before handling food in storage.

Refrigerator and freezer
Daily maintenance makes cleaning easier. Wipe up refrigerator spills immediately with water and dishwashing liquid, then rinse. Make it a habit to check perishable foods daily. Cooked leftovers should be consumed or frozen in 2-3 days. Check food “use by dates,” and discard if the date has passed. If you question the safety of a food remember “when in doubt, throw it out.” Refer to the Refrigerator Freezer Cold Storage Chart for more information.

While cleaning the refrigerator or freezer, keep foods cold in an ice packed cooler. Bacteria grow rapidly on foods at room temperature, such as in the kitchen sink or on the countertop. Foods held at temperatures above 40°F for more than 2 hours should be discarded.

Remove refrigerator freezer shelves and drawers for cleaning. Wash in water and dishwashing liquid soap. Rinse in water and sanitize with a chlorine bleach solution (instructions following). Air dry shelves and drawers or dry with single use paper towels. Dish towels can contaminate.

Wash the interior surfaces of the refrigerator and freezer, including gaskets, with water and dishwashing liquid soap, then rinse. Avoid abrasives, solvents, or any cleaning agent that could damage the interior finishes or leave a chemical taste on foods. Follow manufacturer’s instructions. Baking soda and water is a good choice for cleaning if odors exist.

The exterior can be cleaned with water and dishwashing liquid soap; consult manufacturer’s recommendations for cleaners and polishes. The front grill and condenser coils should be kept free of dust accumulation for energy efficiency; vacuum cleaning several times a year will improve energy performance.

For safety, check and verify the internal temperature of the refrigerator daily. Place an appliance thermometer near the door. Appliance thermometers can be purchased at kitchen, hardware and discount stores. Refrigerators should maintain a temperature of 40°F or below. Temperatures higher than 40°F create an environment ideal for bacteria to grow on food. If the internal temperature is higher than 40°F, adjust the refrigerator’s temperature control settings.

Use an appliance thermometer to check the freezer temperature too. It should read 0°F or lower. If not, adjust the freezer temperature control settings.

Shelf stable food storage
Cabinets and pantries are storage areas for shelf stable foods such as canned foods, cereals, rice, pasta, baking mixes and spices. These areas should be cool, clean, and dry. Poor storage areas are by the stove, under the sink, or any place that is damp with high and low temperature extremes, such as garages or basements.

Dry storage areas should be well maintained. Spilled dry cereals, crumbs and sugars attract insects; prompt clean-up prevents pests. Clean shelf surfaces with water and dishwashing liquid soap, rinse and air dry.

Canned goods that are dented, rusted or bulging, should be discarded. Rotate canned and dry goods, using the oldest products first. As a guide to product’s age, look for package “use by dates”.

Kitchen sanitizing
Your kitchen cleaning will include sanitizing. Once you have cleaned with water and dishwashing liquid soap, then rinsed with water, you are ready to sanitize. Refrigerator drawers and shelves, sinks, food contact surfaces and equipment such as cutting boards, are items to sanitize. An effective, low cost sanitizer is chlorine bleach.

When shopping for chlorine bleach, choose liquid, not gel. The bleach must be unscented. Read the bleach label; it should state for kitchen or food contact surface sanitizing.

You will also note, liquid bleaches have two levels of concentration. Check the label and follow directions. Concentrated “ultra” bleaches, contain 6% sodium hypochlorite. Standard 5.25% sodium hypochlorite is “regular” bleach.

Kitchen spray bottles work well for sanitizing and should be clearly labeled containing “bleach sanitizer.” Bleach sanitizer should be mixed fresh daily in the following proportions:

Ultra bleach 6% sodium hypochlorite 2-1/2 teaspoons bleach per gallon of water
3/4 teaspoon bleach per quart of water
Regular bleach 5.25% sodium hypochlorite 1 tablespoon bleach per gallon of water
1 teaspoon bleach per quart of water
Dishcloths
The dishcloth is the most common cleaning tool in kitchens. If not used properly, it can be a source of contamination. If you've used a dishcloth to wipe up raw meat or raw poultry juices, or soil from fresh produce, you should replace it immediately with a clean one. A contaminated dishcloth can produce millions of bacteria in just a few hours. The best choice for high bacteria kitchen clean up is using paper towels and then throw them away immediately. Keep a supply of clean, machine laundered dishcloths handy. Start out each morning with a fresh, dry dishcloth. At the end of the day, air dry and toss into the laundry for future hot water machine washing and drying

KEEPING A PET-FRIENDLY HOME CLEAN
By Gill Chilton

If you lay down a few ground rules, sharing your home with an animal needn’t mean too much extra work. Don’t worry that you might not be able to train your animal well enough to follow house rules — the rules are for you, not your pet!

Decide which parts of the house you want to share with your pet and be consistent about enforcement.
Restrict your pet to its own bed — not yours!
Carry out regular grooming. Fur caught on the cat comb is fur that isn’t lining your carpet.
Give your pet sufficient exercise and spend quality time together. It’s bored dogs, cats, and rabbits that get scratching and chewing.
FEEDING YOUR CAT AND DOG CLEANLY
Consider an outer room, if space allows, such as a utility area to feed your pet. A utility area often has a sink so you can wash your pet’s dishes and any knives or spoons you use to dish out the food away from your own. Store your pet’s food here too — only opened cans need the fridge.

To clean food and water dishes, use hot water and dishwashing liquid, then rinse bowls thoroughly before drying with a paper towel.

Stand food and water bowls inside a large plastic tray and you protect the floor from spills and can also keep the tray clean by washing it in a solution of bleach and hot water each week.

Avoid feeding your pet on carpet, which is a chore to wash. Remember, cats don’t have to be fed on the floor. A worktop (but not, of course, a kitchen worktop!) may be suitable.

Limit feeding times. How often you feed your pet is probably dictated by your working day, as much as its needs. But for good hygiene, you need to get those bowls cleared up promptly, especially in hot weather. So teach your animal to eat right away so you can wash up his food bowl before you go to work. (Leave the water out of course and, if you’re out all day, some dry food.)

WINNING THE WAR AGAINST ANIMAL FUR
A quality vacuum cleaner is an essential tool in your campaign to lift pet hair from your home. If anyone in the household is asthmatic or prone to allergies, get a vacuum with a high-grade filter. The filter helps keep the microscopic allergens sucked up by the vacuum safely inside the machine.

Use the upholstery tool on your cleaner to suction hairs off sofas and curtains. But don’t bother with those gadgets that use an adhesive roller to lift up hairs. You’ll be there all day, just cleaning one armchair. To rid your clothing of pet hair, wrap a circle of wide adhesive tape around your fingers, sticky side out, and dash up and down your clothes, pressing the tape firmly against the fabric. Pay attention to the bottom of your legs where your pet may have brushed against you. The fur sticks to the tape, leaving your clothes smart again.

For chairs, beds, and blankets (or anywhere your pet sits), brush the area wearing a wet rubber glove. Use your fingers to get right into the corners of cushions. Afterwards, simply rinse the gloves under the tap to remove fur. (Remember to scoop this out of the drain and drop it into the bin.)

Groom your cat and dog outdoors, to minimize airborne skin particles that contribute to allergies. Get loose fur off a molting cat or dog by rubbing over its body while wearing damp rubber gloves. Metal flea combs make good grooming brushes for cats. They’re quicker to use and clean than traditional wood and soft-bristle brushes.

Rub off mud and dirt from your dog using a damp towel. If it’s cold, follow up with a rubdown with a warm one, straight from the clothes dryer or a radiator.

Go with the flow. If you’ve a Dalmatian, buy cream or beige carpets, and avoid dark floor coverings and seating. Black Labrador owners should do the reverse.

VETTING THE BEDDING
Quilted fabric pet baskets look cute. Probably they’re snug and cozy, too. Unfortunately, in cleaning terms, they’re hopeless. A bed for your cat or dog has to be one that you can clean out and disinfect regularly. Failure to do so means that your pet’s bed is likely to become home to mites and fleas that live to bite your pet, making that basket not so cozy after all.

Wicker is a better choice because you can wash down the basket. Take it outside to clean. Shake out loose dirt then use a small stiff brush or the crevice tool on your vacuum cleaner to get out the rest. After vacuuming, always change the bag with care or empty the cylinder, as adult fleas may now be in your cleaner. Repeated wetting can weaken wicker, so only give the basket a thorough hose down occasionally. Choose a dry, sunny day so that it can air-dry quickly and thoroughly. The rest of the time, content yourself with spray cleaner.

You can try removing odors by sprinkling baking soda in the smelly dog or cat’s bed. It won’t harm your pet, and freshens him as well as the bedding.

Avoid cleaning out your cat or dog’s bed altogether — a cardboard box lined with old T-shirts makes for a super disposable bed. Each week, take it outside for a thorough shake and air. Each month, throw everything out (straight into the rubbish, sealed in a plastic sack) and begin again.

28/02/2017

Laundry packets have been in the news a lot the last few years, as safety experts and parents expressed concerns about how safe they are for kids. Reports emerged that some children, mistaking them for candy, were being poisoned. Detergent manufacturers have taken proactive steps to create child-resistant packaging and stricter standards for labeling, but a new study shows that, when left within access of kids, they still pose serious health risks.

The report found that the number of chemical burns in the eyes of preschool-aged children from these products was 32 times higher in 2015 than in 2012, when the packets were first introduced. Looking at data from consumer reports of eye infections and chemical burns caused by detergent pods in three- and four-year-olds, this study found that only 12 cases were reported in 2012. In 2015, 480 cases were reported.

It's likely that the dramatic rise in these incidents is not because these products have become more dangerous, but rather the fact that they are being used more and more in households across America because they're so convenient.

"All cleaning products — especially single-dose laundry packets — should be kept away from children and pets not only when stored, but when in use, too," says Carolyn E. Forté, Director of Home Appliances, Cleaning Products and Textiles Lab. It takes seconds for kids to get their hands on them."

While Forté believes these packs are great, she recommends extra vigilance in households where children live or visit.

"If that's not possible, you should stock up on an alternative product,"
