I say "Fukushima", you say...? If you're still thinking about the N word, you haven't been paying attention. Over 11 years later, Fukushima still struggles with its image when in fact it is, and always has been, one of the most beautiful and agriculturally important prefectures of Japan. Let's move beyond the recent memories and see Fukushima as it always was, incredible mountains and coastlines framing a huge agriculture plain providing safe and delicious food for a healthy nation.

Morning over Lake Suwa, inspiration for the hit anime film "Kimi no na wa", aka "Your Name." I wonder how they feel about their claim to fame being the place destroyed by a meteor?

More ways to stay cool during the hot Japan summer. Stand-up Paddleboarding (SUP) is a popular activity along the coast and around the smaller islands of Japan, like here in the Goto Islands of Nagasaki. Learning is a breeze and on those really blistering days, falling in the water isn't such a bad thing anyway!

The sweltering Japanese summer has officially arrived! Let's start talking about places to go and things to do to stay cool through the hot months of July and August in Japan. How about "chairing" in Kochi? Cool your heels in the crisp clean waters of the Shimanto River while enjoying a good read or an ice cold beverage. Best served with a good friend or two!

No distance ever seems to far when traveling by rail. Japan's train system is so convenient and thorough in many areas that I wouldn't dream of using a car. I use the Seibu Chichibu line whenever I need a quick escape from the city and an hour later, I'm greeted with these amazing views.

I'm absolutely blown away by the fact that a total amateur like me can safely maneuver a camera into the sky and take photos that were rarely seen more than a few years ago. Drone video is great but I want to master drone photography. I have a long way to go but every step is a step forward.

One could argue that Kanazawa, not Kyoto, was the seat of Japanese culture, at least through the nearly 300 years of the Edo Period. I'm not arguing either way, but no question: Kanazawa is a classy city.

Our Story

Japan is an island in many ways. Obviously, it is a group of physical islands, but in terms of culture, Japan has a unique quality that sets it apart from the rest of the world. It also has a unique and difficult language, and in all practicality, Japan has really only been accessible to the modern English speaking world for a little more than 150 years.

Our mission at 365 Japan is to share engaging bits of Japanese culture, cuisine, people and places in English on a regular basis. Not the same old tourist destinations flooding your Instagram feed, but just everyday things you might not expect or notice. If you have a few minutes to spare, we hope to share something new about Japan with you and inspire you to visit the country that has stolen the hearts of many a traveler over the centuries.
