📍CASTILLO DE MONTEAGUADO

The Castle of Monteagudo located in the village of Monteagudo about 5 kilometers from the Murcian capital, this fortification can be seen from practically all points of the nearby geography since it is 149 meters above sea level, on top of a town hill.

Its origins date back to Islamic times, around the year 1078, a time when the first Muslim king of Murcia, Abderramán Ibn Tahir, was imprisoned after his dethronement. In the 12th century, the castle was erected as a symbol of the Hispano-Muslim resistance against the Almohads, and later became the residence of the monarch Alfonso X, the castle being permanently linked to the Castilian monarchs.

Architecturally, the Castle of Monteagudo consists of two concentric walled parts located on top of the hill. The upper part has a rectangular plan defended by numerous cubic towers, the parade ground and the rooms, while the lower part is made up of a wall that gives the building an impregnable appearance.

At the top of the fortification we find the so-called "Cristo de Monteagudo", a 14-meter sculpture created by the artist Nicolás Martínez in 1951.
