What is Day of the Dead?

Dia De Los Mu***os is one of the world’s most misunderstood holidays. Because it’s celebrated within range of Halloween, and features an assortment of macabre imagery and costumes

The Day of the Dead (el Día de los Mu***os), is a Mexican holiday where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink and celebration each November 1st & 2nd.

While October 31 is Halloween, November 1 is “el Dia de los Inocentes,” or the day of the children, and All Saints Day. November 2 is All Souls Day or the Day of the Dead.

Marigolds & Dia De Los Mu***os🍑💛💀

It is believed that the spirits of the dead visit the living during the celebration of Dia De Los Mu***os. Marigolds guide the spirits to their altars using their vibrant colors and pungent scent. These beautiful bursts of flowers also represent the fragility of life.

On a side note, marigolds are fabulous plants to put in the garden that attract beneficial insects that not only pollinate, but also help control bad bugs!

A kaleidoscope of colors and culture🌈

San Miguel de Allende is known for its well-preserved (and very photogenic) Colonial and Spanish architecture. Many religious and civic buildings were built in the style of Mexican Baroque.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, San Miguel de Allende is named after General Ignacio Allende, a prominent figure in Mexico’s War of Independence. The UNESCO recognition notes: San Miguel de Allende acted as a melting pot where Spaniards, Creoles and Amerindians exchanged cultural influences.

We sipped, swirled, and sampled our way around San Miguel De Allende's food and wine scene 🍷

In Mexico, wine isn’t as sought after as tequila, beer, or mezcal, but its consumption is on the rise and wine drinking is gaining popularity. The state of Guanajuato is the fourth largest wine producer in Mexico attracting more wine lovers each year. The most commonly used grapes to make these wines include shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, tempranillo, and malbec.

One of the more unique aspects of the wineries in Guanajuato is that winemakers here are trying to practice “old world” techniques. This means no additives or pesticides, low intervention, and a focus on providing the most natural wine possible 🙌.

The official Ruta del Vino or Guanajuato Wine Route, stretches from the western side of Dolores Hidalgo to the eastern side of San Miguel de Allende.

On the Day of the Dead, it’s believed that the border between the spirit world and the real world dissolve.

During this brief period, the souls of the dead awaken and return to the living world to feast, drink, dance and play music with their loved ones. In turn, the living family members treat the deceased as honored guests in their celebrations, and leave the deceased’s favorite foods and other offerings at gravesites or on the ofrendas built in their homes.

Calavera (“skull” in Spanish) has become one of the most recognizable cultural and artistic elements of the Day of the Dead festivities. Costumes and faces of the colorful calavera are joyful, celebratory figures.

Happy 1st day of April!

Every year on April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. However, we like to think of Earth Day as a daily practice of stepping up for our planet all year round.

Good News Monday!

Cuba is now home to two hotels specifically geared toward members of the LGBTQ+ community, which tourism officials believe is a major step forward for a country historically hostile to that segment of its population.

"Travel executives expect the hotels to help improve visibility for the LGBTQ+ community during a period when the government is considering a family code that, if approved, would legalize civil unions among same s*x couples in Cuba."- Paula Krizanovic

*STOP and take a breather*

Slow tourism is based on the concept of speed. It involves traveling for a prolonged period of time at a slow pace, allowing the tourist a deep, authentic and cultural experience.

Slow travel is typically associated with sustainable practices, taking into consideration the impacts of travel on the environment, society and economy.

Slow travel can be undertaken in any destination, but is particularly popular amongst traditional backpacking routes in destinations such as South East Asia, Central America or Australia.

Are you as giddy as we are? 😆

It's the 1st day of SPRING! And you know what that means? CLEANING! This season it's time to ditch those toxic cleaners for both you and the environment. Check out our list to get you started!

Sustainable Spring cleaning:

🌸Use non-toxic cleaning products. Vinegar, water and baking soda can handle most daily cleaning needs.

🌼Use natural fiber sponges and cleaning agents that are biodegradable, phosphate-free, chlorine-free, and unscented.

🌺Reduce paper use. Use rags instead of paper towels and wash them for reuse. Buy post-consumer recycled paper and recycle it when you’re done.

🌻Repair instead of replace. Spring is wonderful time for a fresh start. But think twice before you throw out that perfectly good pair of shoes or piece of clothing from “last season.”

Comment a spring emoji if you're ready for some spring cleaning!

GOOD NEWS! Take a moment for some positivity today...

The travel industry must be at the forefront of the push for sustainability and the U.S. Travel Association plans to lead that effort through five key priorities moving forward, and the organization will also be forming a new working group focused on sustainable travel to encourage members to have a voice in the future of greening the industry.

The five priorities for sustainability that U.S. Travel has adopted were identified after receiving feedback in a member survey:

1. Spotlighting industry progress, and telling stories on the ongoing actions travel is taking, including innovations

2. Amplifying industry goals and leadership, to reinforce that travel has to lead in this

3. Highlighting why sustainability matters through events and research

4. Identifying the right policies to drive this change

5. Defending against harmful policies that slow progress towards sustainability

Do you know who this is?! 😆

This lady, Dr. Sylvia Earle, the legendary marine biologist and oceanographer, sat with our Blue-Green Connections for two hours at her 5 acre childhood home in Dunedin!

We chatted about hope for the future of our waters and enjoyed each other's company. Dr Earle then took us all out to dinner at Bon appetite - to thank us for our work on the Florida Gulf Hope Spot.

What a crazy inspiration this lady is.
