HALLOWEEN IN IRELAND

Did you know Ireland is considered the 'birthplace' of Halloween? Known as Samhain in Ireland, traditionally it was celebrated to mark the start of Winter. It was also the day that the spirits were allowed to walk the Earth. Communal bonfires were lit to ward off evil spirits and lights were carried home in carved out turnips (the original Jack-o-Lanterns!) For one of the largest Halloween festivals in Ireland, one does not have to look further than in Derry, Ireland. The Derry Halloween festival takes place over 4 days and is filled with all sorts of ghoulish delights.
