The cruise industry continues to take proactive action as supported by the science, going above and beyond in the interest of public health and safety.

The Government of Malaysia has approved the resumption of domestic cruise operations from later this month, making the country the latest Asian market to revive cruising under strict new health protocols.

Beginning initially with short itineraries from Penang, cruises will operate with reduced capacity and strict testing and vaccination requirements for all guests and crew.

Malaysia joins Singapore, Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei as the drivers of cruising’s revival in the region, each having partnered with cruise lines to establish comprehensive health measures in response to Covid-19.

Malaysia has also confirmed it is in discussions with Singapore to prepare for twin-destination cruises and has flagged other international sailings may be possible in the future.

As of this month, around 80% of the CLIA member oceangoing fleet is back in service, and more than 4.9 million people have sailed successfully under our industry’s strict new health measures.

As we approach the new year, CLIA will continue to advocate for a responsible resumption of cruising in countries throughout Asia and around the world.

While rising to the challenges of the global pandemic, the cruise industry has remained committed to responsible tourism practices and continues to make progress on the development and implementation of new environmental technologies.

➡️ CLIA ocean-going members are committed to pursuing net carbon neutral cruising by 2050.
➡️ In addition to LNG, over three-quarters of the global cruise fleet by passenger capacity is now equipped to use alternative fuels.
➡️ 52% of new build capacity will rely on LNG fuel for primary propulsion, a 3-percentage point increase in overall capacity compared to 2020.
➡️ 82% of the new build capacity is either committed to be fitted with shore-side electricity capability or will be configured to add shore-side power in the future.
➕ CLIA and the cruise industry continue to make substantial progress across a range of additional areas.

Annual report shows continued commitment to responsible tourism practices and progress on development and implementation of new environmental technologies

Hong Kong is set to join the global cruise revival this week, with strict new Covid-19 protocols allowing a resumption of short itineraries for local residents.

After approvals from the Hong Kong Government, the first in a series of local cruise-to-nowhere itineraries is scheduled to depart from the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal on Friday and will sail with reduced capacity and pre-boarding testing for all passengers and crew.

Hong Kong’s resumption is similar to operations in other Asian locations including Singapore and Taiwan, where domestic-only sailings within a local ‘bubble’ have allowed a careful and tightly managed return to operations.

15/07/2021

Alaska has become the latest destination to join the global cruise revival, with Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas becoming the first major cruise ship to visit the state in 2021.

The milestone was marked last week with an event hosted by CLIA in Ketchikan, where local dignitaries welcomed the ship and its guests.

Cruising is ordinarily worth US$3 billion a year for the Alaskan economy and supports 23,000 local jobs, making its revival a major milestone for the state’s pandemic recovery.

The return of Alaskan cruising is also being celebrated in the US state of Washington where the Port of Seattle is serving as a base for departing cruise ships. Seattle’s homeport cruise operations will see 84 round trip voyages to Alaska before the end of October.

Worldwide, almost 600,000 passengers have set sail since July 2020 in countries where carefully controlled cruise operations have resumed. These cruises are operating under extensive new health protocols designed to uphold safety in response to COVID-19, and are among the most stringent measures to be found anywhere in tourism.

In the past few days our industry has reached another important landmark as the first cruise passengers to sail from a US port since the start of the pandemic set out from Florida.

Travelling aboard Celebrity Edge, their seven-day Caribbean cruise marks the restart of operations in the world’s biggest cruise market and is the culmination of many months of collaboration between cruise lines and health authorities.

Later this month Hong Kong will also resume cruising, introducing short cruise-to-nowhere itineraries for local residents.

These advances help show how extensive new health protocols can support a careful revival of operations. So far almost 600,000 passengers have already sailed successfully in countries where cruising has resumed, and we continue to work hard towards achieving a revival in other locations around the globe.

At the same time, two more lines joined the UK’s cruise revival on the weekend, with P&O UK’s Britannia setting sail from Southampton and Saga Cruises’ Spirit of Discovery departing from Tilbury. Also in Europe, the ports of Gothenburg, Stockholm and Visby have collaborated to allow a restart of cruising in Sweden, beginning with a recent visit by TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 6.

CLIA's Managing Director, Joel Katz, this evening participated in, and presented to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) virtual session on The Opening and Activation of the Cruise Industry, together with representatives from all the APEC countries. What was very clear from all the presentations and the best practice we can learn from markets where cruise has already restarted, is that a transparent and cooperative approach between governments and cruise lines, clearly laying out the benchmarks and conditions under which cruise can operate, is key. Success depends on the implementation of the robust industry protocols, strong support from government agencies, and high commitment and cooperation from stakeholders.

Hong Kong approves a carefully managed cruise restart in July. In making the announcement, the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Edward Yau said, "The resumption of (cruises to nowhere) itineraries under prudent health precautionary measures can strike a proper balance between public health protection on the one hand, and the public aspirations for some form of leisure travel on the other. The itineraries underpinned by health control safeguards will offer an additional safe vacation option for the community as from the coming summer."

CLIA will continue to work hard towards a responsible resumption of cruising in destinations around the world, and look forward to bringing more news soon.

Singapore’s cruise restart is an excellent example of what a govt and industry partnership, open communications and a scientific approach can achieve.

People said they felt safer going on a cruise than going to some places in Singapore “because everyone is tested before they go on the cruise...So having that framework of assurance has been a major cornerstone of our success."

Singapore has done a stellar job getting the spread of the coronavirus under control. The country also plans to vaccinate its entire population by the end of the year.

It is a testament to the nation's ability to contain the coronavirus and resume operations at a time when many other countries are still struggling.
