EK Bike Way

EK Bike Way The EK Bike Way, is a on road system of routes with approx. 500 miles designed for the beginner to the most advanced plus 7 miles mountain bike trails

Opened May 1,2014. The Bike Way has its main trailhead at Raceland, which will feature a farmers market, a Crafters Center, Local Authors Book Store, Historical Walking Tour, Powell Memorial, Butterfly Garden,Railroad Overlook, and The Quilters Fence. The other trail head will be at Greenbo Lake State Park which has fishing, camping, lodging, dining, hiking, horseback riding, scuba diving and moun

tain bike trails. Routes range from the 10 mile Orange Route that takes you through the area that once was the world famous Raceland racetrack, "The Million Dollar Oval" The 100 mile Red Route that takes you from Greenbo Lake through scenic areas of Greenup and Lewis counties. The 60 mile Blue Route which goes past the Old Town Covered Bridge. The 28 mile White Route and the 40 mile Green Route that goes from Greenbo to Raceland. Additional 200 miles of routes are currently being developed. We haven’t published much on here for a while but with spring approaching we will be replacing missing signs and hope to have two new routes marked. If you know of anywhere a sign needs put back up please post it here

THE KYOVA INTERSTATE PLANNING COMMISSION IS DEVELOPING A BICYCLE/PEDESTRAIN PLAN FOR BOYD AND GREENUP COUNTIES. INTERESTED CITIZENS ARE INVITED TO DROP IN ANYTIME BETWEEN 5 AND 7 PM, ON NOVEMBER 5TH AT THE ASHLAND TRANSPORTATION CENTER 99 15TH STREET TO PROVIDE FEEDBACK ON FACILITES AND POLICY TO BE INCLUDED IN THE PLAN.

Just want to thank everyone who came out for the Pedal-Paddle-Putt and hope you enjoyed it. I also want to thank Papalos Bar-b-que, Dragonfly Adventures,Pirates Partee and The McConnell House for all their help on the event. Everyone I spoke with said they had a real good time and hoped we did it again

For the $30.00 entry fee you get to pick from the green,orange or maroon route, tour the McConnell House and be treated to watermelon, take a 1 hour kayake trip on the Little Sandy River, play a game of putt-putt golf at Pirates Partee and enjoy a bar-b-que lunch at the Raceland City Park. The EK Bikeway Pedal-Paddle-Putt will be August 29 2015. One gets choice of the green-orange or maroon route-1 hour kayake trip on the Little Sandy River- tour of the historic McConnell House-game of putt putt golf-barbecue lunch at Raceland Park all for $30.00. There will be bottled water and watermelon at the McConnell House. This is the yearly fund raiser for the bike way. Money raised is used to buy signs build trail heads buy bike racks etc.tou can register at Active. Com

Reminder of the Riding for Rhyan Benefit Ride on Sunday June 28th, 8:30 A.M. Ride begins at the Raceland KY E.K. Bikeway Trail Head and will follow the Maroon Route. We are asking for a five dollar donation, with all proceeds going to Rhyan. So please come out, doesnt matter if you ride all the time or a first timer, and lets help bring Rhyan home.

UPDATE- Ambulance trip to bring Rhyan Bravo from New York to Kentucky is $8,000.00. Ryan is 4 years old and has been in New York for the past 2 years and is finally stable enough to be brought home. He must stay on a ventilator for the trip, and have a medical team travel with him. I would love to see several hundred cyclist show up for this ride to support Rhyan.

ATTN ALL BICYCLIST OF THE TRI-STATE AREA On June 28th we will be holding a benefit ride for Ryhan Bravo to raise money to help with the ambulance trip from New York to Flatwoods and other medical expenses/supplies that the insurance will not cover. A ride on the maroon route is planned and we will asking each rider to donate five dollars for the ride. Please meet at the Raceland trail head at 8:30 A.M. on Sunday June 28th. So if you are a regular rider or just want to dust off the old Huffy in the garage please come out and help this child. There will also be a benefit carnival at the community center from 1 PM to 7 PM where pizza and hotdogs will be sold ( see FOR RHYANS BENEFIT CARNIVAL on Facebbok). A 5-k race is also being planned for that day if you would want to participate in it to also raise money. Please post a comment if you plan to ride so we can get an idea of how many riders we may have. THANK YOU

Planning is now being done for this year's E.K. Bikeway fund raiser. This year we will be hosting the Pedal-Paddle-Putt on August 29th. The event will be on August 29th,starting at 8 A.M. and include your choice of the green 40 mile route or the maroon 20 mile route, a 1 hour kayak trip on the Little Sandy River ( Dragonfly Adventures) or on Greenbo Lake, game of Putt putt golf at Pirates Cove Family Center, a tour of the McConnell House ( 1860's Greek Revival Style House) and a barbeque sandwhich with slaw, chips and drink at Raceland City Park. The cost is $30.00 per person. We will be posting on Active.com in a few days and ask everyone to pre-register so we know how many barbeques we will need. All proceeds will go the The E.K. Bikeway and the McConnell House.

June 5th,6th, and 7th is the Eastern Kentucky Outdoor Weekend. There will be bicycling rides on Saturday the 6th on the Maroon, Green, and the new Century Route that runs through Boyd, Elliot, and Lawerence counties. Starting times will be posted soon. After the ride, enjoy all the great activities that this area has to offer. We hope everyone has a fantastic time!

The foundation is now being laid for the Eastern Kentucky Outdoor weekend for June 5th,6th and 7th. It will highlight everything to do in Boyd, Carter and Greenup Counties. Included will be rides on different routes of the bikeway, kayaking, hiking, caving, museum tours,fishing,camping,and lots more. More information will be posted later

AS THIS YEAR PREPARES TO DRAW TO A CLOSE I WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE FOR ALL THE WORK THEY DID TO HELP MAKE THE EK BIKEWAY A REALITY. IF I TRIED TO NAME EVERYONE I KNOW I WOULD ACCIDENTLY LEAVE SOME ONE OUT BUT YOU ALL KNOW WHO YOU ARE. I DO HAVE TO THANK THE A.C.E BICYCLE CLUB THOU, AS THE MEMBERSHIP HAS DONE SO MUCH.ESPECIALLY WITH THE KBBC CONFERENCE THAT WAS HELD AT GREENBO LAKE STATE PARK THIS YEAR. AS I LOOK BACK OVER THE YEAR WE HAVE ACCOMPLISHED A LOT, THE RED, BLUE, WHITE, GREEN, ORANGE, YELLOW AND WHITE ROUTES ARE FINISHED, MAPS HAVE BEEN CREATED, THE KENTUCKY BICYCLE AND BIKEWAY COMMISSION HELD THEIR ANNUAL CONFERENCE HERE, BIKE RACKS PLACED AT GREENBO, AND GREENUP COUNTY HAD ITS FIRST TIME TRIAL RACE, WHICH I HOPE CONTINUES AND GROWS. ALSO. SIX COUNTIES HAVE STATED THEY WANT INCLUDED AND THE BIKEWAY HAS NOW BEEN LISTED ON THE TOUR KENTUCKY .COM WEBSITE.WE HAVE DONE ALOT IN 2014, SO I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT 2015 HAS IN STORE. THANKS AGAIN TO EVERYONE AND A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.

Over the next couple of months several new routes will be added to the bikeway. Routes will be added in Boyd, Lawerence and Elliot Counties. Routes in Carter and Lewis Counties are being mapped out and should be marked soon. In Greenup County new routes include the Red A route and the white and yellow routes will be marked in the next week or two. Again a special thanks to Kent Morrison and ACE Members for all their work on the bikeway. Bike racks have been ordered and will be placed at Greenbo and Carter Caves in the next two weeks. Also just a reminder that the Kentucky Bicycle commission will holding their fall conference and meeting at Greenbo Lake November 13,14 and 15th.
