A extremely rare and gentle moment captured of the newest additions to the Mayanbula pride. This one cub didn't want to listen and mom had to take action.

Did you know when elephants “meet and greet”, they may touch each other’s faces or intertwine trunks? This “trunk-shake”, similar to a hand shake, communicates assurance, affection, greeting or a way of assessing strength.

Posted • We headed out on drive in the early morning hours and found a very young Rhino calf with his mother making their way through the bush. We watched as the young one interacted with his mother and played around. Young rhinos are very playful and curious of what is going on around them. The little one kept running around in the bush and every now and then stopped just to run back to mom, almost as if to tell her all about his findings.

White Rhino 🦏 calf investigating a Tortoise.

Rhino calf - tortoise 🐢 interaction

Both date back not only to the dinosaur 🦖 🦕 but also share keratin as a defensive mechanism. Rhinos 🦏 and Tortoises 🐢 have existed since the era of the dinosaurs. The top shell of the tortoise is called the carapace and the bottom is called the plastron . The shell of the tortoise is covered with scutes which are scales that are made of keratin , here is the link with Rhino horn , both the tortoise shell and rhino horn are made of the same protein that our fingernails are made of. Tortoises and Turtles are the only surviving branch of the even more ancient clade Anapsida. Most of the anapsids became extinct in the late Permian period, with the exception of the procolophonoids and the precursors of the testudines (turtles and tortoises). source : https://animalcorner.org

An elephant skeleton is finely tuned for a very heavy body! For example - the skull has tiny air pockets to reduce weight, limb segments line up vertically to form a pillar of support, leg bone marrow is mostly replaced by strong but light spongy bone, and vertebrae are tightly connected (limiting the backbone's flexibility).

Elephants have almost twice as many ribs as we do, but their skeletons make up a similar percentage of total body weight (about 15%). Surprisingly, although there are bones in the tail, there are none in the trunk!
