Project Zawadi is making a difference one student at a time. Read Mgendi's story below.
-- Mgendi's Story --
Project Zawadi offers group counseling for students!
Mgendi was sitting in a group counseling session where the group facilitator was teaching students mindfulness techniques and useful coping strategies. He listened as other students would tell their stories during the session. Initially he didn’t want to talk, or speak up about his feelings with the group. He had been feeling very stressed about academic pressures and didn’t feel like it was safe to share. But as he heard many other students telling their stories and feelings, he realized that he was not the only one! Many of his peers felt the same way.
As weeks went by, and the students began to implement the new coping strategies and techniques of mindfulness learned through the group counseling sessions, Mgendi began to feel connected with his peers and opened up to share about his struggles. He felt less isolated and was able to support and help others, too. The challenges he faced became shared experiences, rather than just personal burdens.
Project Zawadi’s Student Advocates provide this type of support to students so that they build life skills like self-confidence, awareness, critical thinking, and determination. They also help the students create healthy boundaries and a sense of belonging. These skills will serve Mgendi well as he navigates his journey towards academic success.
