The beautiful Austrian-born Romy Schneider was one of Europe's most popular film stars and a cult figure from the moment she played 'Sissi' (Empress Elisabeth of Austria) in the hugely popular Sissi trilogy in the mid-1950s. Although Schneider died in 1982, she continues to be one of the most popular stars in European cinema history. This book analyses her impressive career to place her within a range of European female stars, particularly Germanic and French, who defined cultural and ideological images of femininity on European screens.

Next program will be in May 2005. It is an intimate affair as eight of us will gather around Emmanuel's dinner table each night for great food and conviviality. This will be the only Spring program so please reserve ASAP https://preview.mailerlite.com/l3y6i9e8f5

This well thought out tour/experience that Terrance and Emmanuel created was a wonderful introduction to Southern Rhône Region. It was well planned and extremely well executed sojourn.
The facility was delightful. We felt as though we had entered a time different than today’s hectic pace. For Poppi to open her home and embrace travels with her charm and entertaining stories added to our special experience.
The well appointed and comfortable rooms made a place rest and recovery from the full but well paced itinerary.
The icing on all this delicious cake was the baker, chef, guide and driver, Emmanuel. Gourmet meals, well paired wines, gracious guiding and smooth transportation to our tour locations put positive punctuation on the entire trip.
I recommend this unreservedly as an unforgettable experience. –John Tharp, Laguna Niquel, CA

Courtroom Drama
Just returned from my semi-annual tour of Le Périgord with Martin Walker. In attendance were four lawyers who reminded me of my favorite courtroom dramas: 12 ANGRY MEN, ANATOMY OF A MURDER and THE VERDICT.

Chateau de Fayolle
It is not often that the attractions of a vineyard include a couple of pedal boats, ready to be floated in the property’s own lake. Nor do many Bergerac vineyards have a 15th century chateau built on the ruins of its 12th century predecessor. Even fewer have the unusual distinction of having been owned by two English breweries.

THE PARIS FLEA MARKET

As the largest concentration of antique and second-hand dealers in the world, the Puces de Paris Saint- Ouen, has been a destination for designers and collectors for over a century. A village within a village, its bustling alleyways and hidden corners are home to over one thousand stalls that collectively offer a masterclass in the history of art, craft and design.

In The Paris Flea Market, Kate van den Boogert offers a window into this eclectic and somewhat elusive world by profiling eighteen of the market’s key dealers. Vibrant imagery and revealing texts provide insights into the hidden workings of their trade, the fascinating range of objects on offer and the community of highly skilled artisans which the market nurtures. With expertise ranging from mid- century modern and Art Deco, to Memphis Milano and Louis XVI, these antique and second-hand dealers drive the market’s rich and diverse profusion, not only preserving the history of the decorative arts, but also shaping future design trends.

Don't go to market without it!

If Woody Allen were writing this review he would probably suggest creating a N**i Personnel deck of trading cards like baseball cards-a portrait on the front and statistics on the back: # murdered, mistresses, etc. and a card of the Fuhrer, limited run, would rival a Mickey Mantle rookie card in value.

This is not an original idea to use nefarious people on trading cards as you can see below and if memory serves they appeared in Kinky Friedman's gritty New York novel. GREENWICH KILLING TIME https://preview.mailerlite.com/l5i4p1a4g2

Chalet des Iles
In 1852 Napoléon III ceded the Bois du Boulogne to the City of Paris and Baron Haussmann began its redevelopment.

The Chalet was the realization of Empress Eugenie's dream to erect a chalet on one of the islands created when the lower lake was dug-150 years later M and I enjoyed a relaxed lunch on the chalet's terrace just minutes away from the noise of the city.

You reach the island by a 3 minute boat ride on a vessel reminiscent of the African Queen.

it was originally Fort Duquesne, a French fort, strategically located at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers where they formed the Ohio River. It played a key role in the battles of what Americans know as the French and Indian War.

As Pittsburgh it become the industrial colossus of the Gilded Age producing the coal, iron and steel that powered the industrial age. It was first in steel, food processing, and electricity, and the leaders of those industries--Carnegie, Frick, Heinz, and Westinghouse--are names we still know today.

In this page turning historical novel journalist William Miller, Jr. opens with an account of the great Johnstown flood of 1889 to reveal the indifference to human life exhibited by the robber barons and draws on the life of his great grandfather, Willis McCook, attorney to Henry Frick in his epic battle with Andrew Carnegie.

A must if you are a Pittsburgher and a rich experience if you are not. Terrance, né à Monongahela, PA 1947 https://preview.mailerlite.com/u9g2r0e0e3

Paris Jazz
Jazz had moved up the Missisippi from New Orleans with trumpet players Buddy Bolden, King Oliver and Louis Armstrong and then led by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie swung east to 52nd St and the Village in New York where it slowed down due the constraints of the SLA, the State Liquor Authority, which issued cabaret cards to musicians who played in bars and restaurants where alcohol was being served. A misdemeanour such as smoking or holding a joint was grounds for denial.

So, great players like Miles Davis, Lester Young, Bud Powell, Kenny Clarke and Chet Baker crossed the ocean and found fans and work in the caveau that sprung up after World War II. https://preview.mailerlite.com/d2e0y9t1h6

Lulu and Domaine Tempier
Over the past nearly fifty years, many glorious tales have been written across these pages about Domaine Tempier. On my first visit last spring, as we walked up the shady driveway lined with plane trees, I felt a sudden trepidation—like I was stepping foot on holy ground, here at the mecca of my KLWM fine-wine pilgrimage. But my nerves calmed in a moment, as our gracious, easygoing host Daniel Ravier (who’s been running the show since 2000) welcomed us warmly in the little courtyard, handing out glasses filled with cold rosé. Down in the cellar, we tasted old vintages of lore, wines as vivid, complex, and alive as I’ve ever experienced. For lunch, we picnicked on a terrace overlooking the vineyards, bottles sweating in the cooler under a blazing Mediterranean sun. Madison H. Brown, Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant Lulu and Domaine Tempier
