A lovely repeat guest shared this pic with us, and I can’t stop admiring it. This was taken at Two Rivers Park, which is a favorite spot of ours. It’s a beautiful park with a paved, level walking trail that follows the river. It is right in the middle of town, but feels very separate and peaceful.

Oso Grill in Capitan is about 30 minutes north of Ruidoso and very well known for their amazing green chile cheeseburger. We discovered that their enchilada casserole is equally amazing! While in Capitan, don’t miss Smokey Bear Historical Park and Smokey Bear Museum Gift Shop.

If you drive 45 minutes northwest of Ruidoso, you will reach Carrizozo, the tiny town primarily known for Valley of Fires Recreation Area, a BLM-managed park where you can explore one of the youngest lava flows in the United States. Carrizozo is also along the route to the legendary No Scum Allowed Saloon in White Oaks, which is where we were headed last weekend. We stopped and discovered that Carrizozo is a thriving artist community that is bursting with both an interesting history and enormous potential. A few places that stood out:

Painted Burros (statues scattered throughout the town and painted by local artists)
Gallery 408 (features numerous local artists and kits to paint your own mini b***o)
PhotoZozo, a large photography exhibition (also known as Tularosa Basin Gallery of Photography)
Carrizozo’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (basement level of PhotoZozo and an absolute treasure)
Soul of the West “Bootique”
Zozo Bazaart (Art supply store and small gallery)

It's important to note that some stores are closed during the week, so visiting on a Saturday is generally recommended.

Our latest VRBO review: The views and neighborhood above Ruidoso were perfect— we loved the quiet of the mountainside and patios overlooking the range. The deer and wild turkeys and hummingbirds were fun for my 8-year-old and rancher father-in-law (and any nature lovers!). We cooked meals, played games, took great walks, and just really felt welcomed and at home in the space.
