North Nias Regency (or Kabupaten Nias Utara in Indonesian) is the most northern of five districts on Nias Island. North Nias was inaugurated as new regency in May 2009 during a nationwide drive for greater regional autonomy. Most people here still make their living from farming or fishing. as people are exceptionally friendly and very welcoming to visitors. Mostly untouched by modern development it is a very peaceful and beautiful corner of Indonesia. Most of North Nias consists of rolling hills covered in forests and a long coastline dotted with beaches and small islands. Nias Island is located in the Indian Ocean off the west coast of Sumatra. It is part of the province of North Sumatra and is easily reached by several daily flights from Medan to Gunung Sitoli, the main town on the Island. Medan is only a short flight away from Singapore.
