UMGA, a most important but unknown historical and religious place located in the part of Kaimur hills of Vindhyachal range falling under the boundaries of Aurangabad district of Bihar. As a subdivision of the old Gaya district till 1973, Aurangabad was a part of the ancient Magadha Empire. In fact, Umga was not always an anonymous or unknown place; rather it was capital of a vast and mighty empire in the medieval period. Its boundaries were extended to old Hazaribagh and Gaya districts. A dynasty ruled here for hundreds of years and built grand temples, ponds and a Fort between the 11th and 15th centuries AD. But its splendour was destroyed and this place was lost in the darkness of oblivion. Centuries later, Umga caught the eyes of some British officials and a long research process began 200 years ago. The work lasted for about 100 years and involved big names of Indian Archaeology and History such as Major General Alexander Cunningham (The Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India), J.D. Beglar, Captain Kittoe, Francis Buchanan-Hamilton, W. Peppe, Thomas Frazer Peppe, J. Reginald Hand, Sir George Abraham Grierson (ICS), W.W. Hunter (Director-General of Statistics to the Government of India), LSS O'Malley (ICS), T. Bloch, P.C. Roy Chaudhary, Parameshwar Dayal etc. Dozens of articles in this regard were published continuously in the journals of the Asiatic Society of Bengal and Archaeological Survey of India. Newly researched information about Uma made a sensational spread. The 'American Journal of Archaeology' published news in December 1888 about the discovery of Umga. It was also revealed therein that a report on the temple of Umga in Gaya (old)the district was submitted to the government with a complete technical drawing. Before and after this, many other newspapers and magazines around the world also published such news aboutmUmga. source- Mysterious hills of UMGA..
