Four women kidney donors biked the entire 444 miles of the Natchez Trace Parkway over 4 days to raise awareness for living kidney donation. The women wanted to show that living donors can live full, active lives after donation. The four cyclists rode from Nashville to Natchez. The four kidney donors, who had never met in person until the start of the ride, came from 3 states; Becky Bussey from Colorado, Rebekah Thomas from Vermont, Diane Mills and Anna Cannington both from Mississippi.

“We loved our overnight stop at the Farmhouse Sanctuary B&B. We were warmly welcomed into Conrad and Ute’s beautiful home and felt like family as we gathered around the dining table for a delicious meal prepared by the owners. Spending time with the farm animals was an added bonus before we settled into our private rooms for a much-needed, and very comfortable nights rest. If you’re ever in the area, especially if you’re traveling the Trace, I highly recommend the Farmhouse Sanctuary B&B!”

Tom's Wall in Florence, AL is a 30-year tribute by Tom Hendrix to his great-grandmother, Te-lah-nay. During the Trail of Tears, the young Yuchi girl was forced to walk to Oklahoma. She escaped and spent five years returning to Alabama where she had lived near the Singing (Tennessee) River.

Stones from over 120 countries and with various geologic features contribute to the changing shape, height, and width of the wall which represents the different obstacles she encountered on her journey.

A trip to Tom's Wall in Nashville's Big Back Yard is emotional, inspiring and you will leave touched by the dedication of one man to honor his ancestors.

With Memorial Day weekend comes extra traffic on the Natchez Trace Parkway. Please take a moment to read some important safety reminders directly from our dispatchers who work hard to keep the Parkway safe:

☀️ Be aware of your surroundings
☀️ Bicyclists on the Parkway have the right-of-way and can use the whole lane
☀️ Watch your speed (Parkway speed limits vary from 40 MPH to 50 MPH)
☀️ Watch for milepost markers to track your location
☀️ In an emergency, if you do not know your location or remember the last milepost marker, keep three things in mind:
---- where you entered the Parkway
---- approximately how long you have been traveling
---- your planned location to exit the Parkway

Have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend!

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and it is also a time when many motorcycle riders are enjoying riding on the Parkway. We would like to remind both riders and drivers to use caution to ensure everyone has a safe and relaxing drive this month and throughout the rest of the motorcycle season!

Drivers should stay alert and be aware that motorcyclists could be much harder to see than another vehicle due to their small size (this applies to cyclists as well!).

Motorcycle riders can help keep themselves safe by:
-Wearing a helmet
-Obeying posted speed limits (50 MPH or less!)
-Using caution around curves and near pullout sites
-Watching for wildlife crossings
-Riding unimpaired

You can read the news release on our website: https://www.nps.gov/natr/learn/news/motorcyclist-s-safety-is-everyone-s-safety.htm

Happy Mother’s Day! Roane Fleming Byrnes, a.k.a. “Queen of the Natchez Trace”, was a key leader in establishing the Natchez Trace Parkway as a part of the National Park Service. She lived in Natchez, MS and developed her own “war room” in her home to talk with national leaders about her vision of creating a national park to protect the history of the Old Natchez Trace. A friend of hers stated that Roane paved the Natchez Trace Parkway with “meatloaf and moonshine”.

While Roane and her husband Ferriday didn’t have any children, her hard work gave birth to a new national park in 1938. By 1968, she had traveled over 300 miles of completed parkway. Her commitment to the creation a new national park is an inspiration for what could be accomplished by any individual through hard work and dedication.

What’s a turkey’s favorite dessert? . . . Peach gobbler.

If you happen to be meandering along the Natchez Trace Parkway for a hike at Timberland Park, chances are you’re going to spot one if not several wild turkeys. You may even have to slow down as a flock, which may include a handful of fuzzy babies, crosses the parkway from one wooded expanse to the next.

Although the largest nesting bird in Tennessee, these big birds, ranging from 9-to-15 pounds, can actually fly, albeit over short distances. Even more remarkable is that chicks begin doing this at 6-10 days old. Building nests on the ground, typically simple depressions lined with dead leaves or grass, turkeys roost in the trees at night to avoid would-be predators. Males, knowns as “Toms”, puff themselves into feathery balls and fill the air with boisterous gobbling as they court females or “hens”.

Wild Turkeys, once an important food animal to Native Americans and early settlers, ranged from southern Canada throughout the United States to central Mexico. By the early 1900s over-hunting eliminated the population from most of its range, including much of Tennessee.

Thanks to reintroduction efforts by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, the Wild Turkey is now found in every county in the state. In fact, the TWRA website lists the Natchez Trace Parkway as one of the best places to spot wild turkeys.
