Booking your cruise is so much more than hopping online an reserving a cabin! There's a lot to consider:

- Which line fits your family's vacation needs best?
- What ports offer the activities that you want to experience?
- What type of cabin will work best for you?
- When should you arrive at the port, and how are you getting there?
- What shore excursions are worth checking out, and which ones are skippable?
- How do you navigate the pre-cruise paperwork (passports, birth certificates, check-in, etc)?

One of the very best ways to get the best "bang for your travel dollar" is to book your vacation as EARLY as possible ESPECIALLY if you are traveling during peak season for your destination! Alaska cruises, for example, are never going to be less expensive for midsummer than right when the cruise lines launch their itineraries.

A client of mine is traveling on an Alaska cruise this summer, and she was smart and booked over a year ago and locked in her price. Just for fun, I priced out that same sailing and cabin type today: the price has nearly DOUBLED for the exact same ship, sailing and cabin type. Plus, there was only one single balcony cabin left for the whole sailing!

Moral of the story: book EARLY for peak season travel! Flexible travelers who can sail in Alaska in May or September may have more options closer to sailing, but those balcony cabins will very rarely be less expensive closer to sailing no matter when you go.

BEHIND THE SCENES: Ever wonder what trip research looks like for a travel agent? This is from my past week, researching an Alaska cruise tour for one client and a trip Belgium & the Netherlands for another.

Many of the trips I work on require threading together several components (flights, hotels, trains, transfers, tours, options, and so on) and I have yet to find a better way to note take as I go than good old pen and paper. As a trip takes shape, I find myself referring back to my notes a lot as I work with the client to edit and finalize a trip.

Then when it’s all done - I put everything together in a nice neat itinerary (and I even have an app to share with clients with all their trip details).

As a travel advisor, one of the things I'm asked frequently is "when should I book my trip to [insert destination]?" In our post-covid world, the main rule to follow is BOOK EARLY. As record numbers of people are traveling, booking last-minute becomes a recipe for heartache and high prices.

If you're thinking of traveling over spring break or for summer vacation, now is the time to get busy planning! Here are some general guidelines.

Cruises: as soon as you can commit to dates for best pricing/availability! I'm booking into 2027 now on many lines.

Peak-season travel (summer in the Northern Hemisphere, spring break, or winter holidays): at least 6-8 months in advance. Longer if you have a large family or a very specific resort in mind.

Theme parks: 8-10 months in advance for best choice of resorts!

Shoulder-season travel (Late April/May, September/October): 3-6 months in advance

Low-season travel (winter excluding the holidays for much of the world, summer in the Caribbean): 2-3 months in advance

There's something about this time of year when my feet start getting itchy again - regardless of when I took my last trip, I'm feeling ready to move, to explore, to venture somewhere new. I have so many places on my "someday" list, and I feel the urge to turn "someday" into "today."

I enjoy very few sensations on earth more than waking up in a new city for the first time, a whole day spreading out before me with endless possibilities. It may seem strange for someone who plans travel for a living, but I don't plan a whole lot into my days when I travel personally; although I may have a rough idea of a few things to see or do, I really enjoy the feeling of allowing my day to develop organically. For me, the discovery of a place is in the unfolding of the day, and I rarely fail to find something that surprises me.

I'm curious to know - what is it about traveling that you love? Is it the food, the people, the culture, a sense of accomplishment you gain by checking something off a list?
