Basic Folk approaches interviews with warmth, humor and insightful questions. This podcast fosters the folk community and showcases a genre that is often misunderstood. Basic Folk features complex conversatio

ns about the human experience witnessed from an artistic angle. Our definition of “folk” is extremely broad, so you’ll hear interviews from Amythyst Kiah, Tom Rush, The Lumineers and many more. Basic Folk is dedicated to showcasing the best in folk and roots musicians including BIPOC musicians who have been excluded, or felt like they did not belong, in the folk world. Both Cindy and Lizzie bring unique perspectives to our honest conversations and are dedicated to changing the landscape and the gatekeepers of the folk music community. More: http://basicfolk.com

Twisted Pine's Kathleen Parks dishes on the band's new record, her secret polka origins, what's a good bedtime at fiddle camp and more. KP summed up the Boston Bluegrass-adjacent band in one sentence: "Let's see what happens." That philosophy is definitely present on the new record, which is filled with wild vocal performances and sees the band operating at its highest level.

I woke up today and my wife told me the news. I went for a walk in the woods and found myself thinking about We Shall Overcome and singing it by myself surrounded by fallen leaves and pine trees. I put on Dawn Landes’ new album: The Liberated Woman’s Songbook, I thought about women of the past and how they found their strength. I started posting clips of women who appeared on Basic Folk this year. As I was listening, I wanted to put these voices together all in one spot because I found strength and comfort here. I hope it helps you, wherever you are, whoever you voted for.

Take care today. We’ll be here for you.

Featuring voices of: lizzie no, Sarah Jarosz, Aoife O'Donovan, Dawn Landes, Amy Helm, Missy Raines, Peggy Seeger, Michaela Anne, Ana Egge, Denitia, Liv Greene, Kaïa Kater, Humbird, Leyla McCalla.

We're starting with the end in our conversation with Kasey Anderson. Officially, this latest album, 'To the Places We Lived,' is Kasey's "last album." I think his insistence on this album as the last one has more to do with saying goodbye to parts of the music industry that he wants to release and ways of being in the world that he doesn't want to engage with anymore. Every once in a while you come across a young artist that seems older and wiser than her 26 years. Liv's been giving me that impression since I met her in 2019 when she was at Club Passim waiting tables and breaking hearts on the stage at just 21 years. It's a whole new Liv on her new album Deep Feeler, her first release since coming out as q***r during the pandemic.

Full disclosure: Blind Pilot saved my life, so this was a big one for me (cindy). Israel Nebeker's gentle, yet powerful spirit is channeled through his magnificent band's new record In the Shadow of the Holy Mountain. After struggling with writing for years, he gave himself a month to write an album. He demoed the songs and headed out for a trip centered around spiritual growth in Norway. You won't believe what happens next 🦄✨

Amy Helm has had one of the most fascinating lives that any person can have. As the daughter of Levon Helm, she continues to run The Barn, a music venue and recording studio. The Barn is also where she recorded her new album Silvery City, which is an exploration of the women's voices that have impacted Amy from friends, family, fans and even Amy herself.

It was Lisa Loeb's theater and film side hustles that led to her first big break. Ethan Hawke shared her song “Stay” with Ben Stiller, who included the song in the soundtrack for the film ‘Reality Bites.’ Lisa was the first-ever artist to have a #1 hit on the Billboard charts without a recording contract. The second act of Loeb’s career is the main focus of our conversation. This chapter in the book of Lisa Loeb is all about… children’s music!

Fiddle buddies Bruce Molsky & Darol Anger have single-handedly mentored hundreds of our favorite fiddlers over the past several decades. This famous friendship has culminated in their latest collab: Lockdown Breakdown, an album recorded live in studio in just a few days. We talk nerds, fountain pens, the slow jam and they also do what will go down in history as the worst Lightning Round on this folk podcast.

Ambition vs Acceptance with music journalist Kim Ruehl, Michaela Anne & Aaron Shafer-Haiss of The Other 22 Hours. We work through thoughts and feelings about the definition of ambition: a strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work. We take the approach from a music industry, folk music and even dive into the audience perspective of how fans might feel about an artist's ambition.

Delightful Amos Lee! His new album Transmissions has a gorgeous sonic palette. Recorded with his longtime band in a studio in rural Marlboro, NY, the songs came out as warm as the reclaimed church wood it was built out of. We pal around and talk about the new music, kids, femininity and what a hoagiemouth actually is.
