Basic Folk is a podcast with honest conversations between musicians and Cindy Howes, a well-versed public radio host and music curator, and guest host Lizzie No, a talented singer/songwriter. Basic Folk approaches interviews with warmth, humor and insightful questions. This podcast fosters the folk community and showcases a genre that is often misunderstood. Basic Folk features complex conversatio

ns about the human experience witnessed from an artistic angle. Our definition of “folk” is extremely broad, so you’ll hear interviews from Amythyst Kiah, Tom Rush, The Lumineers and many more. Basic Folk is dedicated to showcasing the best in folk and roots musicians including BIPOC musicians who have been excluded, or felt like they did not belong, in the folk world. Both Cindy and Lizzie bring unique perspectives to our honest conversations and are dedicated to changing the landscape and the gatekeepers of the folk music community. More: http://basicfolk.com

Delightful Amos Lee! His new album Transmissions has a gorgeous sonic palette. Recorded with his longtime band in a studio in rural Marlboro, NY, the songs came out as warm as the reclaimed church wood it was built out of. We pal around and talk about the new music, kids, femininity and what a hoagiemouth actually is.

Matt the Electrician, aka Matt Sever, is quirky and sincere. Before music was full-time, Matt worked as an actual electrician in between folk music gigs and open mics. He found people were drawn to his skills in the trade, so he decided to make it part of his musical moniker. 11 albums later he is still sometimes identified as "Mike the Plumber," but he's got a great attitude.

We talk abt all this & his new album "The Ocean Knocked Me Down" where you get podcasts or here:

English singer-songwriter John Smith got his start playing Liverpool & sideman to Lianne La Havas, Lisa Hannigan and David Gray. Growing up with folk music and guitar music influences from Eric Clapton to Maria Callas to Nick Drake, John’s sensitivity as a player is one of the cornerstones of his music. I (lizzie) got to witness the connection he shares with audiences on a recent month-long tour around the UK.

Gluten fan Steve Poltz loved Dr. Demento, Laugh-in and The Smothers Brothers as a young person. His post-Jewel major label experience tried to make him serious, but you can't keep a comedic genius contained. He's been charming fans and winning hearts since he's been independent for the past two plus decades. Things get funny and things get real with Poltzy.

Flip phone guy John Moreland surprised us with his latest album Visitor in early April. The acoustic record saw the Oklahoma songwriter quitting his smartphone, social media and all touring for six months. The aforementioned flip phone and an old iPhone (for downloaded music only) were his only source of mobile convenience. What manifested was a beautiful psychic change and a whole load of new songs.

Fran & Flora have bonded over ancient music, rooted in Eastern European and Jewish culture, for over a dozen years. Together and separately, the English musicians have been studying with teachers of ethnomusicology in places like Transylvania and Romanian. We talk about why they connect so deeply with this wild music, their beautiful kooky friendship and which Sword & the Stone quote they are always texting each other.

Billy Bragg is on-board Cayamo to talk about songwriting, social justice, punk rock and, of course, The Little Guy (Bragg's nickname for Woody Guthrie). Billy is the real deal: sincere, open and honest... also very cheeky, up for a good laugh and a spot of marmite.

Leyla McCalla and her band (bassist Pete Olynciw, drummer Shawn Meyers and guitarist Nahum Zdybel) join Lizzie No & Cindy onboard the Cayamo cruise to go through their incredible, righteous and fun new record Sun Without Heat. Leyla's really changing the game in the Americana genre when it comes to incorporating the academic into truly bitchin' music. We really loved hanging out with this crew at sea on Cayamo. They had great vibes, good laughs and also very good outfits. More good times with Leyla and band, please!!

Cold weather kid Humbird, aka Siri Undlin, actually has complicated feelings about winter. She eventually gave up her beloved hockey to focus on music at a young age. Her Celtic trio with her hockey-buds proved instrumental in her love for traditional Irish balladry. It eventually led her to the country for an intensive study of their ancient music, whose influence can still be heard in her songs today. Siri opens up about her new record, dismantling white supremacy, love of Minnesota, Aunt Joan and being open to chaos.

Yesterday was live on stage at 🎤🎶 lizzie no spoke with Jontavious Willis in what they call “the most lively interview I’ve ever done.” It was a true intensive on The Blues and what it means to be a person from the country. “I don’t even think about country as a genre of music. It’s a way of life… [it’s] being somewhere quiet [with] not a lot to do so you have tons of time.” Thanks to Jontavious for your creativity and warmth during this special interview. We’re so honored to have been a part of FWAAMFest. Thanks to the organizers, fellow artists and attendees. lizzie shares that the fest “felt like my family reunion. It was like such a great experience and so much camaraderie” 🖤🪕🎻

Hannah Connolly's secret little emo heart has been hiding for a little while, but lucky for us her latest album Shadowboxing is showing her shine pretty brightly. The Wisconsin folk singer, now based in LA, lost her youngest brother in 2015 after her family's car was hit by a drunk driver. Hannah's debut album faced this unbearable loss head-on. It was a record she had to make even though it was scary, hard and challenged her mental health. These days, Hannah's found her joy in making music and it was a privilege to talk to this special artist about the journey she's been on.

Session Americana's Dinty Child Music has acted as a community hub leader for decades in the rich roots scene found in Cambridge and Somerville - just outside of Boston. The network of musicians and artists that Dinty has encouraged is immeasurable. On his second solo album, Dinty found himself wanting to make a record of his songs in order to create joy in said community and connect with his grandkids (who know all the words). He visits the pod to go track by track through the album, talk about island time and his frustrating knack for writing songs in his dreams.
