Bobby-Jo Safaris Inspiring & immersive travel experiences to wild destinations across our planet! Promise 🤞

For me that is reflective of how I got to this point in my life.
(33)

When I ask my clients why they join me on my photographic safaris they talk about the fun, the friendly atmosphere of my tours and the immersive nature of our adventures. Many of my guests have returned on my tours and lifelong friendships are formed. So something is clearly good. 😀

For less experienced photographers I offer step by step advice on understanding the elements of photography for yo

ur camera and even for your phone! 😁. For the experienced photographer I am able to offer the best vehicles and guides and 20 years of experience and knowledge in the destinations that we travel to – and also an exchange of views – I too am always learning! Whatever your experience you will definitely get something rewarding out of my safaris. I started taking photos at 5 years of age and can still remember the thrill my mum and I experienced when we got that packet of prints back! If you are reading this you already know how much fun photography is! Our planet is amazing and diverse and my passion and photographic skills allows me to capture the very best our incredible world has to offer – particularly wildlife! Africa was my baptism into wildlife photography after I graduated with my photographic qualifications. I have subsequently spent the past 16 years working with the most amazing animals and people, and my career has provided me with some wonderful photographic opportunities. When I am not on safari, I work hands on with wildlife and am involved with wildlife conservation projects. This allows me to get very up close and personal with wild animals and the benefit for my clients on our safari adventures is that I have developed an ability to often interpret animal behaviour which leads to very special photographic opportunities as you will see on my website.

So please feel free to browse through my images and contact me if you want to explore why you really should join me on one of my epic adventures.

The hardest and most rewarding image I have ever captured. This is a critically endangered Eastern Mountain Bongo, one of sixty individuals that call the Aberdare National Park home. These animals are highly sensitive and very rarely observed without the help of camera traps. They have been on my “holy grail” wildlife list ever since I first started caring for them in my role as a zoo keeper.

They are such a special species and I was thrilled to be spending time in their habitat. I went to the Aberdares with the hope of observing one but I knew that it was going to be very challenging and that perhaps a black leopard might be easier! I was tripping over leopards in the Aberdares but for three days the bongo made no appearance. My guide and the team from and I spent hours in a tiny little wooden hide overlooking a salt lick. No sign of bongo. We checked camera traps and no sign of bongo. On the second morning we checked a camera trap that was deeper in the forest and a beautiful bongo cow had been there only two hours before we arrived. It was exciting and frustrating. I learnt so much about bongo behaviour, habitat and conservation during my time in the Aberdares.

On our final morning we made one last hike into the forest to try and catch a glimpse of a bongo. We started our walk at first light which was still dark in the forest. We walked so slowly and carefully to the salt lick. It’s the quietest I have ever been 🤣 My heart raced at the thought of buffalo, elephant, leopard and hyena that we might potentially encounter. As we approached the salt lick I saw ranger Kirui stop and turn with a huge smile and he whispered the word we all wanted to hear “bongo”. A family of five were moving off the salt lick and making their way back into the thick forest. Three adults and two juveniles. They looked like beautiful red ghosts moving through the darkness of the Aberdares. The last female stopped and stared straight at us for about thirty seconds and I managed to capture this photo. My heart was pounding!

Once the family of bongo left we retrieved the camera trap footage. It was amazing to see them smelling and listening to us as we approached. We arrived 100 meters from the salt lick at 06:15.

So grateful for the wonderful Mike Prettejohn and the Bongo Surveillance Project! For all that they do for mountain bongo.

“Snow Leopard photography is unlike any other wildlife photography. It is much more of an adventure. You don’t drive to the animals in a vehicle, but trek through the snow for the sighting. Believe me the reward is well worth the effort. To finally see the well camouflaged snow leopard in its environment is very exciting”

You might notice an improvement and an increase in social media content from now on, well it will definitely be of a much more professional standard 🤣 That’s because my sister Sarah has joined the honey badger community and is helping me with all things safari.

My sister has always been such a support to me. Sarah keeps me humble and is the messenger of truth bombs that I need from time to time 🤣

Sarah will always be the batgirl to my cat woman 🦇

India a mesmerising and exhilarating experience with Bobby-Jo Safaris.

This was the best decision I have made in a long time, travel with Bobby-Jo Safaris.

It was obvious from the start Bobby-Jo has a passion to teach how to photograph Wildlife in their environment, this is done with apparent ease and genuine want for others to enhance or develop their photographic skills and editing. ( Even for those of us who leave their lens cap on).

The trip itself was seamless from internal flights, over night train trip - (a hoot), accommodation fantastic, the food absolutely stunning, with varying dietary requirements were easily catered for.
Vehicles arrived on time for each safari, what fun climbing into these each day, knowing you are off to witness and take a photos of Indias diverse and amazing wildlife.

Bobby-Jo and Anurag our brilliant Indian guide are experts at spotting wildlife, we experienced an abundance, swimming tigers, rhinos, elephants, birds, sloth bear too many to mention, we had CLOSE encounters, it was exhilarating,

Would I do it again, yes I would: a group of 4 strangers came together and shared a cultural, mesmerising experience.

This trip with Bobby-Jo has re kindled my passion for photography:

Go meet Bobby-Jo and prepare for an incredible experience.

Great photo taken by our guest & friend Mat Kemp Photos.

We had to work hard to get the fossa in Kirindy on this safari but our patience paid off and we were treated with a wonderful sighting at night and also on our last morning. This is a young female that was resting not far from camp.

We did it! We found the elusive fossa!

Madagascar's largest mammalian predator, found throughout the forested areas of Madagascar, but in relatively low numbers.

We saw both this female and a male the night before that was very actively following her around as its breeding season currently.

Happy World Gorilla Day!

A silverback sized thanks to my awesome honey Badger guests who recently spent time with mountain gorilla in Uganda.

Your visit has helped contribute to protecting this incredible species. Not only has your gorilla permit help provide protection to gorillas but your visit has provided employment to the local communities that live and surround gorilla habitat.

Happy World 🦍 Day!

Managed to capture this cute moment on my recent Uganda safari. This young infant and blackback played for the entire hour that we spent with them. It was just awesome to watch!

Our Story

Duma Safaris has been created by Bobby-Jo Vial & Bradd Johnston who are both incredibly passionate about Africa and its wildlife. Both have been travelling to and hosting safaris in Africa for over a decade and in the process have developed a network of contacts and relationships with camps, safari guides and local safari operators which allow us to organise your safari with trusted and reliable local operators. Duma Safaris has been developed to deliver value based wildlife photography safaris to some of the most amazing wildlife habitats left in Africa with a genuine focus on quality and providing all guests a real value for money experience. Many of our tours will make a genuine difference to wildlife conservation by visiting specific projects and providing guests with a unique insight into on-the-ground projects and raising the funds necessary to continue this important work.
